CORINTHIANS CAI NO SEGUNDO TEMPO

Last chance for Vince and Stoneman to impress

As the selectors look to blood younger players and give them a long lead-in to the next Ashes series, there is pressure on James Vince and Mark Stoneman to step up in Sydney

George Dobell in Sydney02-Jan-20181:57

‘Dreamed of playing in Sydney’ – Stoneman

The Ashes may have gone but, for several England players, the Sydney Test could have career-defining implications. The likes of James Vince (199 runs at 28.42 in the series) and Mark Stoneman (208 at 29.71) have had some decent moments in Australia without producing the performance that would have either cemented their place or changed the direction of a match. And with the squad for the series against New Zealand set to be announced on the morning of January 10 (Australia time) both have one last opportunity to impress.Stoneman is by far the more secure batsman. Despite a top score of only 56 after seven Tests, despite having scored only nine more runs than Vince and despite a record strikingly similar to that of Michael Carberry (who was dropped after he averaged 28.10 in Australia in 2013-14), Stoneman has impressed with his attitude and is an almost certain pick for the New Zealand tour. The fact that few other openers are pushing for his spot might well be a factor, too.But Vince needs a performance in Sydney. While he has, at times, looked a high-class player, he is another who has failed to produce the match-defining total. He has only two half-centuries after 11 Tests, and there is a growing sense of impatience over his contributions. He remains likely to make the squad for the New Zealand tour, but two failures here could change that.Counting against Vince, however, is that many of those players the England management like the look of – Joe Clarke, Liam Livingstone and Dan Lawrence – are vying for a middle-order spot. And as the selectors try to bring younger players into the side with a view to providing them a long lead-in to the next Ashes series, the pressure on the likes of Vince will only grow.Gary Ballance is another possible casualty before the squad for the New Zealand series is announced. Ballance has been given almost no chance to impress in Australia – he has scored 51, 1 and 45 not out in his three innings and has not played a first-class game – but may be squeezed out as the selectors look to the future. It is likely that Ben Stokes will be named in the squad. But that does not mean he is likely to make the tour. His name will appear, as it did in the limited-overs squad, as a legal nicety to ensure that the ECB is not seen to be prejudicing the on-going investigation into his actions outside a Bristol nightclub in September. Realistically it seems most unlikely he will make the tour.Toby Roland-Jones, who will go on the Lions’ tour to the Caribbean, is the likely beneficiary. Mark Wood and Craig Overton, who will not be considered for selection in Sydney as he recovers from a cracked rib, also look likely to make the New Zealand tour, with Jake Ball in danger of missing out. Steven Finn, who underwent surgery on his knee having returned home from the Ashes tour after a few days, is not thought to have regained the fitness required for selection.1:25

Starc’s absence showed in Melbourne – Stoneman

The shape of the England team for the Sydney Test is not yet completely clear. While it still appears likely that Mason Crane will make his Test debut, a first look at the pitch has caused some confusion. It is currently greener than expected and offers a decent covering of grass. That grass will be cut back, though, leaving a pitch that will essentially remain good for batting. As a result, the balance of probability suggests that Moeen Ali may retain his place at the expense of Tom Curran – although there are injury doubts over Chris Woakes who was sent for a scan on his left side on Wednesday morning and if he does not get through training on Wednesday, both Curran and Moeen could be included.Omission after one Test would be cruel luck for Curran who let nobody down with his performance on a horribly slow wicket in Melbourne. But the surface did show up his lack of pace and, as England try to juggle their need for some variation in their attack and some depth to their batting, Moeen may retain his place at No. 7 in the hope that his selection as a second spinner will allow him to relax and regain his best form. There were several new faces at England’s training session at the SCG on Tuesday. Three young county legspinners Matt Parkinson (Lancashire; currently playing Grade cricket for Gordon -the club Crane played for last year), Josh Poysden, (Warwickshire) and Matt Critchley (Derbyshire) were among them, while Stuart MacGill, the former Australian legspinner who had worked with Crane last year, watched on and offered advice. The other notable aspects of training were the long stint Joe Root had – he was dropped from the team for the Sydney Test in 2013-14 and is desperate to end this tour on a high – and a slightly jaded look to a couple of seamers. The huge workload they undertook in Melbourne – Anderson alone bowled 59 overs in the Test – may have taken a toll.”It’s been a pretty frustrating tour on a personal level,” Stoneman, who watched the 2006-07 Ashes Test here from the crowd, said on Tuesday. “Everybody knows the key to Test cricket is getting big scores on the board and if you’re only making 30s then you’re giving the opposition a chance to make inroads. If you give the Australian attack a sniff, they come pretty hard and take wickets in bunches.”On the flip side, as we saw from Alastair Cook the other day, if you’re out there for seven or eight hours, the attack will wilt a little bit. Given the nature of having to bowl 25 or 30 overs, big scores can be put on the board and gives you chance of winning games. It’s been frustrating from a personal point of view, but hopefully I can put that right here.”

Mowbray has unearthed West Brom's new Harvey Barnes in "unbelievable" star

West Bromwich Albion will travel to Norwich City up next in the Championship hopeful of another positive result to ensure their grip on a playoff spot becomes tighter.

The battle for sixth spot could well heat up across some crunch games to follow in the second tier, with Tony Mowbray’s Baggies currently occupying the coveted position, but the EFL’s elite league is known for its many thrilling twists and turns.

If the playoffs are clinched, West Brom will hope their luck is in, having slipped up on their last two appearances in the Championship’s unpredictable lottery.

Amazingly, their playoff misfire during the 2018/19 campaign occurred even with Harvey Barnes in the Baggies camp, who has since become a Premier League star away from the Hawthorns.

Harvey Barnes' impressive rise since leaving West Brom

West Brom has been home to many rising stars over the years on loan, with Romelu Lukaku once lining up for the West Midlands club during the infancy of his playing days.

Barnes has a similar story to the lethal Belgian, with the now Newcastle United winger entertaining Baggies supporters for one short, but sweet season, even if promotion ultimately evaded his loan side.

Harvey Barnes

The 27-year-old attacker fired home an impressive nine strikes from 28 appearances for Albion, alongside also picking up eight assists as his new employers very nearly jumped up to the Premier League.

Whilst West Brom had to make do with staying put in the second tier, Barnes managed to leap up to the top-flight on his own and never looked back, with the Magpies winger now up to a stunning 75 goal contributions in the Premier League from 190 overall outings.

So, who will inspire the Baggies to a play-off place this time around?

West Brom's new version of Barnes

West Brom haven’t exactly been the most free-flowing team to watch this season, with a mammoth 18 draws next to their name reinforcing their ability to grind out a result if needed, on top of the fact they’ve only scored a meagre 48 strikes from 38 games.

But, regardless of this, Tom Fellows has still managed to stand out as a full-throttle option on the left wing, with the homegrown gem subsequently morphing into his side’s next Barnes.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

A dazzling fleet-footed winger, there are plenty of similarities between the two with their ability to drive forward with the ball in a positive fashion catching the eye of the Hawthorns masses.

Looking at the table above, Fellows matches Barnes’ electric output in terms of big chances missed and big chances created, with a whopping 11 assists next to his name actually bettering the 27-year-old’s assist count by five.

Only two goal contributions off matching his counterpart’s overall loan numbers at the Hawthorns, the “unbelievable” talent – as he’s been lauded by Baggies teammate Karlan Grant previously – will hope he also can follow Barnes’ upward trajectory by making it in the top-flight soon, potentially with Mowbray’s men.

Heartbreakingly, much like Barnes, Fellows could also just leave West Brom behind in pursuit of bigger and better things, with Everton reportedly keen admirers of the England U21 international.

The blistering winger’s long-term future in the West Midlands could all rest on whether promotion is sealed or not, therefore, with the 21-year-old perhaps the spark that’s needed to break his club’s playoff hoodoo.

Liverpool and FSG in contact to sign new £30m+ striker likened to Zirkzee

Liverpool and FSG have reportedly made contact to sign a new striker who has been compared to Manchester United struggler Joshua Zirkzee.

Liverpool charging for Premier League title as Man Utd and Zirkzee struggle

The Reds are on course to lift the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season in charge at Anfield. It has been a brilliant campaign under the Dutchman, however, it could still be an extremely busy summer on Merseyside.

The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract at the end of June, with the former set to move to Spain with Real Madrid. Talking recently, Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool need to sign “at least five” players ahead of the 2025/26 season.

“I’m excited to see where Arne Slot will take Liverpool because it looks like they’re going to win the league, but there are still so many areas to improve. He needs a centre-back as back-up to the two that we have, he’ll need a right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold likely to leave.

“I think he needs a centre midfielder to replace Endo, someone younger and that he trusts, a centre-forward to play and a left-winger. There are at least five or six players he needs to get in – three to go straight in the team and three to be strong back-ups.”

Liverpool now ready to sell player Slot's "delighted" with after £50m+ bid

A Premier League side have reportedly submitted an offer.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s rivals, Man Utd, have had a season to forget under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils have been in the bottom half of the Premier League for large parts of the season, and one player who has struggled is Zirkzee.

It has been claimed that Man Utd regret signing the forward from Bologna last summer and are looking to sell him alongside goalkeeper Andre Onana. Interestingly, Liverpool have now made contact to sign a striker who has been compared to the Man Utd forward.

Liverpool in contact to sign Mohamed Amoura

According to reports coming out of France and shared by Sport Witness, Liverpool are one of three clubs who have made a move to sign Royale Union Saint-Gilloise attacker Mohamed Amoura.

Currently on loan at Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, Amoura could sign permanently for the German side this summer for €14m plus €4m bonuses. However, Wolfsburg may then sell the Algeria international for €40m (£33.3m) and make a quick profit, with Liverpool chiefs making contact over a deal.

Fellow top-four rivals Arsenal and Nottingham Forrest have also made an approach, but it is unclear if the three teams have contacted Amoura and his agents, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise or Wolfsburg.

Stokes questions DRS over Crawley's lbw dismissal

“I don’t think it’s unfair for someone to say ‘I think the technology has got it wrong on this occasion.'”

Vithushan Ehantharajah05-Feb-20243:48

Where did India win the Vizag Test?

Ben Stokes has questioned the DRS for giving Zak Crawley out lbw but does not believe it was the reason England lost the second Test in Visakhapatnam.India levelled the series 1-1 with victory by 106 runs on day four, bowling the tourists out for 292 in pursuit of 399. Just as in the first innings, Crawley was the leading scorer, this time with 73, while no one else passed 36.Crawley was holding firm as wickets fell around him in the morning session. At the end of the 42nd over, he was struck on the pad by a length delivery from Kuldeep Yadav, which was given not out on the field by standing umpire Marais Erasmus.India captain Rohit Sharma took his time before asking for a review and was rewarded when Erasmus had to subsequently overturn his original decision. The contentious element seemed to be the impact of the ball into leg stump, which, to the England captain, looked far less certain than DRS’ projected path.Related

“Technology in the game is obviously there,” said Stokes at stumps. “Everyone has an understanding of the reasons it can never be 100% which is why we have the umpire’s call. That’s why it’s in place.”When it’s not 100% as everyone says, I don’t think it’s unfair for someone to say ‘I think the technology has got it wrong on this occasion’. And that is my personal opinion. I will say that.”But in a game full of ifs, buts and maybes, I am not going to say that’s the reason why we haven’t got the result we wanted. I’m just saying my personal opinion is that the technology has gone wrong on this occasion, and I think that’s fair to say.”India appeal for an lbw against Zak Crawley•Getty Images

Crawley walked off with 205 still to get, closely followed by Jonny Bairstow five balls later, leaving England 194 for 6 going into the afternoon session. India needed just 26.4 overs to take the remaining four wickets to square matters ahead of a 10-day break in the series. The teams will meet again for the third Test in Rajkot, which begins on February 15.Asked if he was looking to escalate his complaints, Stokes added: “You can’t really do much with things that have been and gone. A decision has been made, and you can’t really overturn a decision that has been made. That is where I stand on that.”

Cummins hopes for 'a silver bullet' to halt Test cricket's devaluation

“Unfortunately the issue is that some of the other countries aren’t getting paid as well for playing international cricket,” Khawaja says

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jan-2024Pat Cummins doesn’t believe the decline in the popularity of Test cricket is “as dramatic as it sometimes gets spoken about”, but admits he does get worried about the future of the five-day game at times. His team-mate Usman Khawaja pointed to the lack of pay parity across the cricket world and said international cricket and Test cricket had to be “incentivised” for players that aren’t paid as well.”My hopes are that it’s even stronger than it is now, in ten years’ time or 20 years’ time,” Cummins told reporters ahead of Australia’s third Test against Pakistan in Sydney. “I think in some regards leading to this Test summer, some of the question marks were against Pakistan and West Indies. We’ve had two fantastic Test matches against Pakistan, really well supported, big crowds.”So I don’t think it’s in as dramatic a decline as sometimes it gets spoken about. But I think there is an issue just with the amount of other cricket out there, obviously competition for talent is higher than it’s ever been.”Related

Discussions around the future of Test cricket resurfaced late last week when South Africa announced a patchwork squad for their two-Test series in New Zealand in early February. With many first-choice players engaged in the SA20 league at the time, the uncapped Neil Brand has been named captain. The 14-member squad has seven uncapped players, with 15-Tests-old Duanne Olivier the most experienced of the lot.Cummins hoped that South Africa’s decision to send a second-string squad to New Zealand was just a one-off occurrence.”I grew up absolutely loving Test cricket,” he said. “I think it does go through phases. I know the South African team aren’t sending their strongest side. I’m hoping it’s a phase.”Speaking to , Khawaja said that world cricket needs to wake up to the crisis-in-the-making and address it.”In my personal opinion, unfortunately the issue is that some of the other countries aren’t getting paid as well for playing international cricket,” he said. “That’s just the raw facts. I know this because I’ve talked to players from other nations, I’ve asked them what their average salary is, what their match contracts are for their countries.”It would be just great to see all the boards and where their finances are at. Are they struggling, is the money going into the right places, is it going back to the players. We’ve got to figure out a way for them [other countries] to be incentivised to play international and particularly Test cricket. That requires transparency from all cricket boards around the world to try to figure out how to pay the players the best way they can.”Once you can get on top of that, if you see a massive shortfall for say the Windies – they’re struggling, they’re not bringing in enough money – then world cricket needs to gather round to help. But until you get that clarity and 100% know the money isn’t being misallocated, it is hard to know.”Shan Masood, the Pakistan Test captain, said ahead of the Sydney Test that while he was “not 100% educated” on the subject, he wished for the best XIs taking on the best XIs in the game at all times.”It’s a pity South Africa aren’t being able to send their full strength squad but hopefully somewhere down the line the schedules can be made in a certain way that we see the strongest XIs playing Test cricket,” Masood said at a press interaction.Cummins, Khawaja and Masood were speaking a day after Steve Waugh had accused the ICC and various cricket boards of not caring enough about Test cricket.”Obviously they don’t care,” Waugh told the . “It’s pretty obvious what the problem is. The West Indies aren’t sending their full-strength side [to Australia this summer]. They haven’t picked a full-strength Test team for a couple of years now. […] If the ICC or someone doesn’t step in shortly then Test cricket doesn’t become Test cricket because you’re not testing yourself against the best players.”I understand why players don’t come. They’re not getting paid properly. I don’t understand why ICC or the top countries who are making a lot of money don’t just have a regulation set fee for Test matches which is a premium, so people are incentivised to play Test cricket. Otherwise they just play T10 or T20. The public are the ones who are going to suffer because it’s not the full side playing, so it’s not Test cricket.”

While T20 is seen as the most popular format with the masses, the Australian grounds still have generous numbers coming in to watch Test cricket. The Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan last week had over 100,000 people watching just the first two days. But that’s not always the case elsewhere in the world, and it has Cummins just a tad worried.”Every summer feels bigger than the last here in Australia, but obviously going overseas, that’s not the case,” Cummins said. “In some regards, I am a little bit worried at times, but at the same time, T20 cricket has never had more supporters and I don’t think there have been more supporters in the world watching cricket.”As a Test cricket lover, I wish everybody was watching Test cricket, but I’ve never seen cricket stronger than what it is at the moment.”Will universal match fees for Test matches do the trick to attract more players to play the longer version of the game? Cummins doesn’t hold a strong view on that but is hoping for a “silver bullet” that could potentially help Test cricket regain its popularity.”Ideally we find a way to make it work where we’ve got 15 or 20 Test-playing nations who are all really strong,” Cummins said. “I understand there are lots of different challenges, so I feel really privileged that in Australia it’s a priority and it’s really well-supported every time we play. I don’t know what the silver bullet is, but it’d be great if there was one.”

Derby County move for 45 y/o manager to replace Warne; he’s keen for talks

Derby County are believed to have made an approach to bring in an “incredible” manager as Paul Warne’s successor, according to a new claim regarding their search for a new boss.

Derby eyeing Paul Warne replacements

The Rams made the difficult decision to part company with Warne last week, having endured a seven-match losing streak in the Championship.

The recent defeat to Sheffield United left Derby languishing in the relegation zone in 22nd place, with the club feeling that it was the right time to make a change before the situation got worse.

The search is now on to find a successor to Warne, and according to one claim, Derby were set to make an approach for Blackburn Rovers manager John Eustace, looking to snap him up from their Championship rivals. In fact, the 45-year-old even admitted as much this weekend after his side’s FA Cup defeat to Wolves, saying:

“I’ve just come off the pitch and realised that they’ve made an official approach. I’ll have to chat with the owners and see what’s happened.”

Derby make approach for Eustace

Now, according to The Express & Star, Eustace is keen to discuss the idea of replacing Warne at Derby, possibly being willing to up sticks and leave a team chasing promotion to the Premier League midway through the season. The BBC have said that Derby’s planned approach for Eustace has become official to Blackburn, as stated by the manager himself.

It is pointed out that the Rams have reportedly “triggered a £500,000 compensation clause” in the Englishman’s contract, with a return to the club where he finished his playing career on the cards.

Birmingham City's former manager John Eustace.

Eustace could be such an exciting appointment for Derby, and it could also make waves in the Championship, considering he would be moving from one of the best teams in the division to one of its biggest strugglers.

He has received so much praise in his managerial career to date, with pundit Ali Maxwell saying of him towards the end of last year:

“They are into the top six in the Championship with six wins in a row; what and who is underpinning this incredible start to the season which many people, myself included, did not see coming – John Eustace. They are into the top six in the Championship with six wins in a row; what and who is underpinning this incredible start to the season which many people, myself included, did not see coming – John Eustace.”

Eustace, 45, may still be relatively new to life as a manager, but the early signs in his career have been positive, so it is easy to see why Derby consider him the front-runner to bring in.

The fact that he has steered his Blackburn side into sixth place in the Championship, and therefore into the playoff places, suggests Derby would be bringing in a manager capable of guiding them away from relegation between now and the end of the season, prior to leading them to greater things beyond the current campaign.

Maresca is eager to bring a new centre-midfielder into the mix, however, and has urged BlueCo to set their affluent sights on Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

This follows an enquiry for Saint Etienne star Mathis Amougou, confirming that Chelsea want a fresh dimension in the middle of the park to boost their challenge across three fronts this season.

Why Nico O'Reilly could become a star

Over the past decade or so, Manchester City’s churning production belt has established itself among Europe’s elite youth factories. Chelsea picked the ripest fruit of this system, signing Cole Palmer for £42.5m in August 2023.

Palmer’s talent was patent, and it’s safe to say that Chelsea have received bang for their buck. Open and peer past the lid of O’Reilly’s youthful potential, and you get the sense that they could repeat a shrewd trick with this one.

Pep Guardiola hailed him as “another talent we trust a lot” after a handful of promising displays this season, featuring six times for the first team and bagging a well-worked goal against Salford in the 8-0 FA Cup thrashing.

It’s a truism for youngsters that they will play across sundry tactical roles as they find their feet, and while Maresca – who won the Premier League 2 with City’s youth brood in 2020/21 – will relish the accommodating tactical fabric, it’s clear that O’Reilly’s flair and skilful approach would see him thrive in a roving midfield role – especially when buttressed by Moises Caicedo at six.

Romano has rubber-stamped Chelsea’s interest, but TEAMtalk have also chipped in on the news and reiterated Blues’ interest in Kobbie Mainoo. Top talent, dynamic, powerful, but Mainoo has been transfer-listed at £70m by the Red Devils and this has understandably dissuaded the capital-based side.

O’Reilly might not have really broken the water surface of his potential but he’s certainly got the ability to eclipse someone like Mainoo and become a superstar of the English game.

With a rangy physique and an easy-limbed gait, the teenage talent could be the perfect signing for Stamford Bridge, already showing versatility that many seniors fail to muster with such balance and style.

Mainoo will no doubt pride himself on being a complete-skilled midfielder, and rightly so. But the 6 foot 2 O’Reilly has it all and more. As per Sofascore, he won eight of ten contested duels against Salford, made four tackles and completed both of his dribbles.

It’s only Salford, deniers decry. But once upon a time, Palmer was feeding off scraps under Guardiola’s wing, waiting to be given a proper chance to show what he’s made of.

Transfer Focus

Chelsea must take a leaf from their own book here, strengthening themselves and weakening a rival simultaneously. Palmer’s wreaking havoc in Chelsea blue, and O’Reilly could be the latest to thrive from such a switch, ensuring that Maresca forgets the name Mainoo in an instant.

India vs Pakistan the only Asia Cup Super Four game with a reserve day

This is a change from the earlier playing conditions, which had a reserve day only for the final on September 17

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Sep-2023A reserve day has been added to the India vs Pakistan Super Four game of the Asia Cup on September 10. It is the only match apart from the final to have a reserve day. The change to the playing conditions was announced by PCB, advising spectators to hold on to their tickets should a reserve day be required. For both the matches with the provision for a reserve day, efforts will be made to complete the match on the original day even if it means shortening the contest. If the reserve day is triggered, the duration of the contest will remain the same as on the last ball of day one.Related

Rain had forced a washout in Pallekele when the two teams first faced each other in this Asia Cup. Rain then returned in India’s first international match against Nepal, at the same venue, but it wasn’t as persistent on the day, allowing India a 23-over chase, which they aced to qualify for the Super Four. The late decision to add a reserve day for only the India-Pakistan match in the Super Four round didn’t go down too well with Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusinghe”I haven’t seen this kind of thing in another tournament, this changing rules in the middle of the tournament,” he said at a press conference. “I am sure there is a technical committee that has representations from every participating countries. They must have decided for some other reason. Yes, it is not ideal. We would love to have an extra day also. Other than that, I don’t have much to comment because they have made a decision.

“Once you have made a decision, we don’t have much say. If we were consulted before, we would have a comment. Since it is already made, I don’t have any concern. We just get on with what we are asked to do.”Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood said he was surprised at the decision.”It’s a little surprise when I first heard,” he said. “But we don’t organise the competition, so there’s nothing much we can do about that. I only see it becoming a problem if the reserve day provides points for someone else and affects us or someone else. There’s nothing we can do about it. We get on with preparing, and do the best that we can.”With rains also forecast in Colombo for the next week, the PCB, the official hosts of the tournament, was on board with plans to move the Colombo matches to Hambantota. But eventually the ACC sent an email to the stakeholders stating that the matches were to be played in Colombo as originally scheduled. The PCB agreed to the decision reluctantly but not without sending a letter to ACC president Jay Shah protesting the decision-making process. It was during these discussions that the PCB first raised the prospect of adding a reserve day for this game, worried about the implications of a second India-Pakistan game being washed out in a tournament of which they are officially the hosts.A rain threat hangs over the India vs Pakistan match on Sunday, too, with up to 90% chance of precipitation. If the weather clears up, India’s bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah could return to action after having missed the Nepal fixture for the birth of his child.Bumrah, who had just returned from a long-standing back injury, is yet to bowl in an ODI in the lead-up to the World Cup next month. He made his ODI comeback last week in the Pakistan game, but didn’t get a chance to bowl since rain prevented Pakistan from starting their innings.

Steven Smith has detailed how he felt like he’d had “a dozen beers” after being floored by a Jofra Archer bouncer at Lord’s on the last Ashes tour.Smith has made his return to the famous English ground this week, training on Saturday for the first time since the first Test. Australia’s players did not enter the centre wicket, but Wednesday’s second Test at Lord’s will mark Smith’s first match back there since the 2019 Ashes. In one of cricket’s more frightening scenes of recent years, Smith was hit by an Archer short ball in the back of the head while on 80 and lay on the ground for some time before retiring hurt.Related

He briefly returned to the field at the fall of the next wicket before being out lbw for 88. He was subsequently ruled out of the match with concussion.”It was a very difficult period to get through,” Smith told the podcast. “I caught one on the arm, got away with a few pull shots that are top edge and a couple in the gaps.”And then I copped one in the back of the head, which hurt a fair bit. At that stage, I didn’t realise I was getting concussed. I went off and did all the tests, passed all the tests.”It wasn’t until I came back out. Half-an-hour after, when the adrenalin sort of went out of my system and I started to feel quite groggy – probably like I’d had a dozen beers, to be honest.”The England players crowd around Smith•Getty Images

Smith also revealed he had difficulty picking up the ball that day in the rain-affected drawn Test. “It was quite a dark, gloomy day. The clouds were rolling in and out,” Smith said.”Lord’s itself can be a little difficult when they are bowling from the members’ end with the members sitting there and the sightscreen not as big as at other grounds.”There were a few distractions there, and it was just a day [when] I wasn’t quite seeing the ball as well as I would have liked from that end.”The fact Archer is missing this series through a recurring elbow injury is one of the great disappointments of the English summer, such was the ferocity of the pair’s battle in 2019.Smith’s exit from that Lord’s match prompted the rebirth of Marnus Labuschagne as a Test batter, brought back into the Australian side and averaging 59.34 since. As a result of the concussion, Smith did not play in Australia’s Headingley demise in the next Test but returned for the final two matches and finished the series with 774 runs at 110.57.
