Injury-hit Leicestershire land statement win over Middlesex

Ben Mike claims key wickets as du Plooy, Roland-Jones resistance is unpicked

ECB Reporters Network02-Jul-2024Despite missing eight senior players through injury or unavailability, Leicestershire recorded their first victory of the Division Two season and inflicted a first defeat on Middlesex as their Vitality County Championship match ended in a 123-run win for Lewis Hill’s team inside three days. After being skittled for 86 in their first innings on day one, Middlesex were left to chase an unlikely 466 – a fourth-innings total they have bettered only twice in their history – if they were to leave Grace Road with a fourth success of their campaign after Leicestershire made 372 in their second innings. In the event, they were bowled out for 342, the decisive phase coming in the half-hour after tea, when Leus Du Plooy (60) and Ryan Higgins (41), their leading runscorers this season, were out in quick succession. On a pitch carrying much less menace than it had earlier in the match, Middlesex skipper Toby Roland-Jones at least offered some late defiance, throwing caution to the wind with a 33-ball 59 that included eight sixes before he was last man out.Du Plooy had been caught by Ben Green off the bowling of Ben Mike, who were the two players who did most to influence the outcome of the match. On loan Somerset all-rounder Green hit 77 second-innings runs to go with his career-best four for 28 in Middlesex’s first innings, adding two more wickets today and taking the catch on the mid-wicket boundary that clinched the win for his temporary team-mates.Mike added 41 second-innings runs to his career-best five for 22 in the first innings, finishing with eight wickets in the match after his second-innings three for 88.Already 404 runs to the good when rain forced an early finish on day two, Leicestershire added another 61 in the dozen overs it took Middlesex to dismiss Mike and Green at the start of the day.Mike, who had clubbed leg spinner Luke Hollman for six and four in the same over, holed out to long-on after the ninth-wicket pair had put on 89.Yet Green was able to pick up another six boundaries while keeping last man Matt Salisbury away from the strike before he was caught at short third man. With a potential minimum of 186 overs remaining in the match, the required run rate for Middlesex was therefore a modest 2.5 per over.In the event, clearly keen to put pressure on the Leicestershire bowlers, openers Mark Stoneman and Sam Robson launched the pursuit at double that rate. Both, though, were out inside the first 11 overs. Robson edged behind off Mike for two. Stoneman, who got away with a difficult chance to third slip on five, numbered six boundaries in his 34-ball 30 but was caught at second slip when Green found some bounce and away movement.Du Plooy and Max Holden were relieved to reach lunch unscathed at 74 for two and were notably circumspect thereafter. On a surface that was still prone to variable bounce, it became a game of patience for both sides – one in which, by tea, Middlesex will have felt they were doing pretty well.At 167 for three, they still needed another 299 but Holden, leg before getting only half forward to an inswinging delivery from Salisbury, was their only casualty of the afternoon session, although there was concern for Du Plooy, who took a bang on the helmet when he ducked into a bouncer from Mike just before completing a 111-ball half century.Yet the pendulum swung Leicestershire’s way at the start of the final session, with the key wickets of Du Plooy and Ryan Higgins falling to Mike and Salisbury.Du Plooy, forced to take evasive action by another Mike bouncer, slapped the next delivery straight to backward point, ending what seemed like the key partnership after 78 runs. Then Higgins, dropped by Ben Cox standing up to Salisbury on 39, departed in the tall seamer’s next over as the Leicestershire wicketkeeper rapidly made amends.Josh De Caires led a somewhat charmed life against Scott Currie, who made the next breakthrough by having Jack Davies strangled down the leg side, but ultimately fell to the off spin of Louis Kimber for 36, caught at slip, a bonus wicket before the new ball, with which Green struck with the first delivery as Hollman was bowled offering no shot for 25.Mike picked up his eighth wicket of the match as Henry Brookes was leg before before Roland-Jones, as captain smarting most from the defeat, took his frustration out on the ball.

Harrison Ward, Daniel Hughes power Sussex to victory

First-wicket pair put on 99 inside eight overs, including Hughes’ 32 off six balls

Sussex 181 for 2 (Ward 68, Hughes 47, Simpson 45*) beat Essex 178 for 9 (Elgar 54, Pepper 51, McAndrew 3-33) by eight wicketsA masterful exhibition of stunning hitting from openers Harrison Ward and Daniel Hughes gave Sussex the platform to an eight-wicket victory with 26 balls to spare against an Essex team who had axed their Vitality Blast captain Simon Harmer. The first-wicket pair put on 99 inside eight overs – including 32 from a Daniel Sams over – as 10 sixes rained down all around the Chelmsford ground. The Australian Hughes claimed four of them in his 18-ball 47, and Ward chipped in with three in his 68 from 36.However, it was left to John Simpson to hit Luc Benkenstein for 10 off two balls in the 16th over to complete Sussex’s fourth success in five Blast matches this season. In turn, Essex, put in, failed to post the sort of score that might have been expected after Dean Elgar anchored two fifty-run stands with stand-in captain Adam Rossington and Michael Pepper. However, when Pepper was dismissed for a 26-ball 51, it precipitated a clatter of eight Essex wickets for 54 runs in 43 balls. They finished on a decidedly below-par 178 for 9.Ward and Hughes went off like trains as they hammered eight fours in 11 balls from Shane Snater and Aaron Beard. It did not stop there. After Ben Allison arrested the onslaught with just five conceded off the fourth over, Sams was dumped for 644666 in an incredible over of power hitting from Hughes. At one stage the pair had hit 50 from nine balls.Hughes had raced to 47 when he swept Matt Critchley into deep square-leg’s hands. By the halfway point, Sussex required just 50 runs more for a facile win, but they lost Ward, caught behind off Allison, the one bright spark with the ball on a dismal evening for the home team. However, the pre-match news that Harmer – who would have been playing his 100th T20 game for Essex – had been omitted from the team, rested or dropped depending on who you asked, was almost as seismic as the on-field carnage if not totally surprising: he had not taken a wicket in Essex’s first five Blast games and contributed just 17 runs with the bat.Rossington helped Elgar put on 50 for the first wicket inside six overs, though the captain’s contribution was 16 from 11 balls before he got an inside edge as he attempted to swipe Ollie Robinson out of the ground.Elgar had survived a drop at slip by Tom Alsop on nought, but while he outscored Rossington, he was comprehensively outgunned by Pepper for the second fifty stand of the innings. Pepper hammered 40 of those runs, including four sixes to different parts of the ground off the Sussex spin pair, Danny Lamb and James Coles.Pepper reached his half-century from 24 but two balls later he lofted Nathan McAndrew to backward square leg to precipitate the collapse. McAndrew struck again when his next delivery had a bemused Jordan Cox bowled.Paul Walter became a third wicket in five balls as he advanced down the wicket against Jack Carson and was stumped. Elgar reached his fifty with a straight six, but again fell almost immediately, lobbing Coles tamely to mid-on.The earlier onslaught became a distant memory as Matt Critchley swished at Coles and was bowled, Sams departed to a catch at deep square leg, giving McAndrew another wicket, and Benkenstein attempted a reverse sweep and lost his off-stump the ball after hitting Robinson for six over midwicket. Carson took a third catch in the match, dismissing Snater at deep mid-on.

'We are investigating several people in Sri Lanka' – ACU head Alex Marshall

Alex Marshall explains why the ICC’s efforts have been heightened in an attempt to fight corruption in Sri Lankan cricket

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Oct-2018What prompted the ACU heightening its presence and operations in Sri Lanka?Because in some countries, and Sri Lanka is one where I am very concerned, the high number of reports that we are getting and the high number of investigations would indicate that the corruption is in the system. Sri Lanka is the country where we have conducted the most investigations in the last 12 months with Zimbabwe a close second.Corruption may be linked to organised crime. So we are very worried about the young men and women players, who are very vulnerable in a system that may have within it corruption. So I am driven by stopping this cycle where a young player coming into a national team anywhere in the world is put in an impossible position by people of power and authority, where they can say ‘no’ to the approaches and will probably never play cricket again, or they can say ‘yes’ and then they are compromised forever. And we fear that there may have been examples of people who became corrupted when they were very young, coming into the team, who might have later in life become corruptors of young players themselves. So it is a cycle of corruption and abuse within the system. And I want to break that cycle and give the players more protection. One of the ways would be using criminal law to catch some of the corruptors outside cricket. And criminal law is not there in the Indian subcontinent. So the Sri Lanka government has been very good in proposing new legislation. But also we want to support them on having really strong, independent anti-corruption within cricket in Sri Lanka.Recently the ACU held a special briefing with the teams ahead of the limited-overs leg of Sri Lanka’s home series against England. Was there any specific purpose behind addressing both teams?Firstly, it was not to do with the current series. During the briefing, we showed names and pictures of active corruptors in cricket who were trying to get at players both in Sri Lanka and at tournaments elsewhere in the world. So we have openly shared the current information of active corruptors, we have shown their pictures, given their names and details. This way we felt the players are better informed. The exercise has already lead to new information coming forward from the teams. How many of these corruptors were shown to the teams? We showed them six. There are probably 12-20 very active corruptors that we are currently monitoring. All men?The pictures shown were all men, but there are couple of women, too, involved in the whole picture. And are they all local? In Sri Lanka it was both local and Indian corruptors. In most other parts of the world it is mostly corrupt Indian bookies. You also met the premier of the Sri Lanka along with several other key officials. Can you expand on the purpose of that meeting? We met the competent authority [in charge of Sri Lanka Cricket], the sports minister, the solicitor general [responsible to drafting new legislation], the Prime Minister and the President of Sri Lanka. The meetings with all these people were to give a description of what we see as the picture of corruption within Sri Lanka that is affecting the cricket. They have been very positive in wanting to work together to introduce new legislation in Sri Lanka as a starting point that would make match-fixing or approaches for match-fixing illegal. Without criminal law, if someone is outside cricket [the ACU] don’t have any sanctions. I will still call them in for an interview. I will still disrupt them. I will still publish their picture. I will still make life difficult for them with immigration and travel. But I haven’t got any powers that I can use to sanction. Whereas in countries like South Africa, England and Australia there are specific criminal offences of trying to do match-fixing or approach a player. So your investigations are not restricted to match-fixing and approaches made to players? We are doing several investigations into various types of corrupt activities. The focus is really on the people. We are investigating several people in Sri Lanka connected to cricket – from inside and outside of cricket. These people could be current players, ex-players, administrators, senior officials, people outside the game.Did the ACU submit any names of people in its meetings with the Sri Lankan heads of state? We never name people unless they are charged. Once charged we give out the basic detail and the real detail is given only after the person is charged by a tribunal. [In the meetings with Sri Lankan heads of state and government officials] We did not name anybody. There was no list submitted as has been speculated. We absolutely did not submit any list.

Jennings' second hundred trumps Stokes five as Lancashire home in on victory

Durham’s Ben Stokes took five second-innings wickets for 98 against Lancashire at Blackpool but Keaton Jennings’s second century of the match helped ensure that his side will go into the final day of this game as warm favourites to win their first Vitality County Championship match of the season.Jennings was dismissed by Stokes but only after making 155 in his side’s 353 for 9 declared, setting his former side what would a county record fourth-innings score of 475 to win.Durham’s confident pursuit of that distant target was damaged by Tom Aspinwall, who took two wickets in seven balls, and the visitors ended the day on 134 for 3.Lancashire made the most cautious of starts to the morning, only nine runs being scored in the opening eleven overs of the day for the loss of nightwatchman, Will Williams, who was lbw to Ben Raine for one.Jennings was particularly careful, taking 54 balls to score the dozen more runs he needed for his half-century, but his circumspection was justified on a pitch offering left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson plenty of help.Stokes was brought on from the South End in the 15th over of the day and soon had a wicket when he trapped George Bell lbw for 17. Stokes also had Jennings caught at second slip off a no-ball when the opener was 75 but the England captain’s initial six-over spell cost 36 runs as Jennings and Tom Bruce sought to accelerate in the second half of the morning session.Having scored 33 runs off 16 overs in the first hour of play, Lancashire added another 82 off 15 in the second and Jennings reached his century off Paul Coughlin’s last ball before lunch when he tucked the ball backward of square on the leg side. He became only the second batter after Warwickshire’s Jim Stewart in 1959 to score a hundred in each innings of a match at Blackpool.Jennings and Bruce had taken their fifth-wicket partnership to exactly 100 when Bruce was caught behind by Robinson for 43, but Jennings went on to pass 11,000 first-class runs on what became an unusually productive afternoon for Lancashire’s batters.Stokes returned to the attack and had George Balderson caught behind for 17 before he eventually had Jennings pouched at mid-off by Scott Borthwick for 155. Typically, the England captain was the first man to congratulate his former Durham colleague and he also dismissed Aspinwall to finish with 5 for 98 in Lancashire’s second innings and a match analysis of 38-2-169-7.Jennings declared when Lancashire’s ninth wicket fell just before the scheduled tea break, leaving Durham needing 475 to win. Borthwick and Alex Lees made an impressive start to their pursuit of that goal by putting on 83 in 16 overs but Aspinwall then struck twice in his first seven balls.First, he had Lees well caught low down to his left by Matty Hurst for 40 and then he bowled Colin Ackermann for a five-ball nought with a fine delivery that nipped away to hit the off stump. Three overs later, Borthwick was bowled by Nathan Lyon for 39 when he attempted to slog-sweep the Australian off-spinner and Durham ended the day still 341 runs short of their improbable goal with David Bedingham unbeaten on 31.

Birmingham plan to beat Rangers to free transfer by offering £30k-p/w deal

Birmingham City are now ready to offer a £30,000-a-week contract to sign a 23-year-old on a free transfer this summer, according to a recent report.

Birmingham City eye proven Championship defender

The Blues’ stay in League One was short-lived, as expected, as they have been by far the best team in the division. Chris Davies’ side are back in action on Thursday evening, with nothing on the game apart from pride, as Birmingham wrapped up promotion and the League One title a long time ago.

Wagner and Brady already in "talks" to sign EFL star for Birmingham City

They’re not alone, though.

1 ByCharlie Smith Apr 11, 2025

They have four games left to play in the league, but the focus will likely be turning towards next season and what the club wants to do in the summer transfer window. It’s already been reported by Wales Online that the Blues are interested in a move to sign Harry Darling from Swansea City. The centre-back is out of contract at the end of this campaign, and while he has an offer on the table from the Swans, Birmingham are keen on swooping in and securing a free transfer.

The 25-year-old has performed well for the Welsh side this season, and his experience of Championship football could be the reason why Davies wants to add him to his Birmingham team for the next campaign.

Birmingham plan to offer big contract to Kwame Poku

It is not just Darling that the Blues want to sign on a free transfer; according to Football League World, Birmingham City are preparing to offer £30,000 a week to sign Kwame Poku on a free transfer from Peterborough United.

It was reported earlier this month that the Blues were already in talks with Poku over a move to Birmingham. It was also claimed that, as well as Birmingham, Crystal Palace and Rangers are also interested in the EFL attacker, who has once again had an impressive season.

Football League World now reports that Birmingham are planning to beat Rangers and Palace to the signing of Poku by offering the attacker a £30,000-a-week contract, which is likely a significant increase on his current deal with Peterborough.

Posh did try and secure Poku’s future at the club earlier this season, but the forward turned down what was a record contract offer for Peterborough, and now the League One side expect him to leave for nothing at the end of this campaign.

The 23-year-old has scored 12 goals and recorded eight assists in 26 League One games this season, and that has been achieved in a team that has underperformed and been nowhere near competing for a League One play-off place.

Poku’s potential arrival at Birmingham would see him join the likes of Jay Stansfield, Alfie May, Keshi Anderson, Scott Wright and Lyndon Dykes – there will be a lot of competition in the forward ranks, which is exactly what’s needed to fire upwards instead of looking downwards next term.

'On the move!' – Leandro Trossard drops transfer hint as Arsenal fans predict summer move away from Emirates Stadium

Leandro Trossard has made a significant change off the pitch that’s triggered speculation about his Arsenal future. The Belgium international recently ended his long-standing partnership with agent Josy Comhair and has now joined DH Sports and Entertainment Agency, a Germany-based firm. The timing of this development, alongside a stalled contract negotiation, has fans and pundits wondering if a move away from north London could be on the horizon.

Trossard, who has a contract at the Emirates running until the summer of 2026, is believed to be open to staying with the Gunners. However, talks over a new agreement have hit an impasse. Although Arsenal have the option to extend his deal by another year, discussions so far have primarily focused on a potential pay rise, without necessarily changing the duration of his existing contract. No agreement has been reached despite months of dialogue.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The departure from Comhair, who had been leading these talks, comes at a delicate time, especially as the agent is currently dealing with health-related challenges. Sources suggest that while Trossard has not formally asked to leave, Arsenal are now open to considering appropriate offers should they arrive during the summer window.

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

The decision to switch agents has caught the attention of Arsenal supporters, many of whom believe this could be a precursor to a transfer.

One of the fans, @leafricangooner, wrote: "Looks like he could be on the move this summer then if a reasonable offer comes in."

While @nishfoshizzle said: "Don’t mind him leaving for a good price tbh."

Whereas, @TheCarpetAFC speculated: "Speculative thoughts out loud: This may be a signal of a move. I feel like often when players get a change of representation and it’s announced online, specifically, said player usually ends up leaving. Of course, I’m aware this is not factual 😂 but it’s got me thinking.."

@toshine4u wrote: "Maybe he should leave, so we can get Leao or Rodrygo."

Meanwhile, @rfngljaspe wrote: "Trossard changing agents like he’s plotting a summer twist. Something’s cooking."

DID YOU KNOW?

Selling a player like Trossard, who still commands considerable value in the market, could prove a practical way to raise funds without weakening the squad significantly. Arsenal are looking to bolster their attacking options this summer and are keeping a close eye on Real Madrid forward Rodrygo. The Brazilian, who has struggled to secure consistent playing time under Xabi Alonso, could be available if the Spanish giants decide to cash in. In addition to Rodrygo, Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze is also high on the Gunners’ radar.

Arsenal to pull plug on Benjamin Sesko pursuit?! Gunners growing 'frustrated' with striker's wage demands as Mikel Arteta continues hunt for new striker

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal had made Sesko their number one target for the number nine position this summer and had appeared close to sealing a deal for the forward. Mikel Arteta has long been an admirer of the Slovenian and the Gunners seemed like they would be able to strike a deal with RB Leipzig. Yet, according to the talks with the player have stalled over his wage demands. There were also reports that the club were unhappy with Sesko demanding a release clause to be included in his contract too. Arsenal have not given up hope of landing Sesko's signature, but there remains distance between all parties involved.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Should Sesko’s wage demands be considered unreasonable, Arsenal could switch to their attention to Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres. Arsenal are admirers of the Swedish goalscoring machine, but are yet to make a serious approach given their priority to Sesko. Arsenal also believe that Sporting are demanding too high a price for the forward and would need to see a fee for the 27-year-old drop considerably before making a move. Should moves for either Sesko or Gyokeres not materialise, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins remains on the Gunners’ radar.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Arsenal are set to announce their first piece of business completed this summer imminently with Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi almost confirmed as a Gunner. The Gunners are also expected to sign Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga as a back-up goalkeeper. A big-money move for Real Madrid’s Rodrygo remains just a rumour for now.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?

There is a lot of work for sporting director Andrea Berta to be doing to have the Arsenal squad ready for pre-season. Amid a host of incoming signings, Berta is also tasked with moving out a number players considered deadwood. Thomas Partey is growing closer to leaving on a free transfer, while the futures of Reiss Nelson, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Fabio Vieira remain in the air.

Why Shakib Al Hasan is one of cricket's greatest allrounders

On Shakib’s 33rd birthday, we look at his excellent batting and bowling numbers

S Rajesh24-Mar-2020Shakib Al Hasan turns 33 today. He is currently serving a one-year ban for not reporting suspected match-fixing approaches, but that doesn’t take away from the fact he is one of the best allrounders to play all formats of the game, and arguably the best cricketer Bangladesh have ever produced. Here are some numbers to show why:Batting average minus bowling average
This is always a good measure to evaluate the quality of an allrounder, especially in Test cricket, where scoring rates/economy rates usually don’t matter as much. With a batting average of 39.4 and a bowling average of 31.12, Shakib is easily the best among the current crop of allrounders with a difference of 8.27; Ben Stokes is next with a difference of 3.86. Going back to the beginning of 2000, only Jacques Kallis is ahead of Shakib, among allrounders who have scored 2000 runs and taken 100 wickets.ESPNcricinfo LtdEven if you go back further for an all-time list with the same cut-offs, Shakib still finds a place among the elite. Only five allrounders have a higher difference between the batting and bowling averages. And here is a selection of those he leaves behind: Tony Greig (difference 8.23), Ian Botham (5.14), Richard Hadlee (4.86), Chris Cairns (4.13) and Kapil Dev (1.4).

He is among the best in ODIs based on this parameter. Like in Tests, only five players have a higher differential between batting and bowling averages.

The ultimate Test match performance
To score a century and take ten wickets in a Test is one of the toughest acts in cricket, as it calls for one to play the lead role in at least two – and often three – innings of a match. Ten times as many triple-hundreds have been scored in Tests as an allrounder achieving this rare double.Against Zimbabwe in Khulna, Shakib joined an elite club that includes only Ian Botham and Imran Khan, when he scored 137 in Bangladesh’s first innings, and returned figures of 5 for 80 and 5 for 44 to spin Bangladesh to a 162-run win, in the process achieving something that hadn’t been done in over 31 years.ESPNcricinfo LtdHere are more numbers to prove (if more proof is necessary) that Shakib belongs among the very best allrounders in all formats: Shakib is the quickest to achieve the double of 3000 runs and 200 wickets in Tests. He achieved the mark in his 54th Test, one quicker than Botham.
Since his ODI debut on August 6, 2006, only three players – Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan – have won more Man-of-the-Match awards than Shakib’s 21.

Shakib is one of only five players to achieve the double of 5000 runs and 250 wickets in ODIs. The others are Kallis, Abdul Razzaq, Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi.
He ranks among the top three in terms of runs scored and wickets taken for Bangladesh in each of the three formats.
