"Pathetic" – Pundit slams Sutton's comments following Rangers win at Celtic

Pundit Robbie Savage has criticised comments made by Chris Sutton on social media after Rangers beat Celtic 3-2 over the weekend, describing them as “absolutely pathetic”.

Rangers seal superb win at Celtic

The Gers may only have an extremely slim chance of going all the way in the Scottish Premiership this season, but they earned bragging rights over their rivals on Sunday afternoon.

Hamza Igamane’s superb late strike won it for Rangers to stun the Celtic supporters, with the visitors initially going 2-0 up before being pegged back in the second half.

For Barry Ferguson, it was a great moment, as he continues to impress in interim charge of the club he used to captain during his playing days, but his side still have a 13-point deficit to make up on the Hoops.

Writing on X after the game, former Celtic striker Sutton couldn’t help but have a dig at Rangers, saying: “Superb advert for the Scottish game. Igamane took his goal superbly and deserved of winning any game. Bottom line is the gap at the top is 13 points with 8 games left. I know who I’d rather be. Fair play to Rangers who play well when the pressure and expectation isn’t on them…”

Savage slams Sutton's comments as "pathetic" after Rangers win

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday [via Ibrox News], Savage slammed Sutton’s dig at Rangers after their victory at Parkhead:

“I’ve got to say, Chris, before you talk about anything else, I’ve seen your tweet earlier. Absolutely pathetic. Give Rangers a bit of credit, they’re the form team in Scotland right now.”

In truth, this is something that Rangers fans have simply come to expect from Sutton, given his time as a Celtic player during the 2000s.

The former striker can’t seem to give the Gers any genuine praise without having a dig at them at the same time, but supporters are unlikely to be too perturbed after a win away to the Hoops.

As for Savage’s comments, he makes a genuine point when saying that Ferguson’s side are the “form team” in the country currently, with Sunday’s victory further proof of that.

He should be captain: Rangers star has become an "animal" under Ferguson

Rangers secured their first win over Celtic at Parkhead since 2020 on Sunday.

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 17, 2025

Rangers find themselves in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, following last week’s penalty shootout triumph over Fenerbahce, so there is still hope of them going all the way in the competition.

Granted, there have been many times when Celtic have been clearly superior this season – they beat the Gers in the Scottish League Cup final and Rangers were poor too often under Philippe Clement, for example – but their adversaries have found an extra gear in recent weeks, aided by the arrival of Ferguson.

Rangers supporters could be split when it comes to wanting the 47-year-old to get the job on a permanent basis at the end of the campaign, but on this current evidence, he is doing his chances no harm whatsoever.

Newcastle now in race for "world-class" £38m striker who may replace Isak

Newcastle United are now in the race to sign a “world-class” striker who is ready to leave his current club this summer, according to a report.

Isak speculation rumbles on

Alexander Isak’s heroics at Wembley won’t be forgotten in a hurry, with the Swedish striker playing a major role in ending Newcastle’s 70-year trophy drought, but speculation about his future continues to rumble on as we edge closer to the summer transfer window.

Arsenal are set to make an “important” proposal to sign the forward, as revealed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, and there have been suggestions the 25-year-old has now expressed a desire to move to the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season.

With the former Real Sociedad man contracted until 2028, there is little reason to sanction a departure this summer, unless a transfer request is handed in, but that does not seem particularly likely given that he has stated how much he loves the club and city.

Newcastle and PIF in contact to sign "incredible" £33m+ PL star for Howe

Eddie Howe is eyeing a deal for an in-form star once the transfer window opens.

BySean Markus Clifford Mar 31, 2025

However, Eddie Howe must plan for the worst-case scenario, and a report from Italy has now revealed that Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic could be brought in to replace Isak this summer, having now decided it is best if he parts ways with the Italian club.

Vlahovic’s wage demands are too high for the Serie A side, and with the forward unwilling to accept a lower salary, it appears as though he could be heading for the exit door, having also had tension with manager Thiago Motta.

Dusan Vlahovic in action with Genoa'sKoniDeWinter

A move to the Premier League could be on the cards for the Serbian, with a fee of around €40m – €45m (£33m – £38m) touted, and Newcastle are ones to watch in the transfer race, although Manchester United and Arsenal are also in the picture.

Vlahovic likely to be downgrade on Isak

The 25-year-old is enjoying a decent season in front of goal in Italy, netting 14 goals in all competitions, however, Newcastle’s talisman is outscoring him by some distance, having bagged 19 goals in the Premier League alone.

As such, while Serie A writer Siavoush Fallahi has lauded the former Fiorentina man as “world-class” in the past, he is likely to be a downgrade on Isak, much like almost any striker being linked with a move to St. James’ Park.

The Newcastle star underlined his importance to the team with his magnificent performance at Wembley last time out, scoring the second in the 2-1 victory, and Howe will be hoping he is eager to compete for more trophies at St. James’ Park.

With Callum Wilson’s contract set to expire this summer, Howe may need to bring in a new reinforcement at striker, but unless Vlahovic is willing to play second fiddle to Isak, a move for the Juventus striker isn’t in Newcastle’s best interests.

'Everything consumes me, nothing slips away' – Luciano Spalletti insists he would never resign from Italy job and had to 'force' director to tell him of sacking

Luciano Spalletti breaks his silence ahead of his final game as Italy coach, revealing his refusal to resign, and what happened behind closed doors.

Norway defeat Italy 3-0 in World Cup qualifierItaly boss insists he never intended to resign Claudio Ranieri and Stefano Pioli among the frontrunnersFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Italy boss Spalletti confirmed during a pre-game press conference that he will leave his role as head coach after the World Cup qualifier against Moldova, following a 3-0 defeat to Norway that effectively ended his tenure. Despite refusing to resign, Spalletti revealed while speaking to saying he had “forced” the director to inform him of the decision. He will step down after tonight’s match.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Spalletti’s short spell as Azzurri boss ends in disappointment after failing to rejuvenate the team post-Euro 2024. His departure opens the door for former Leicester City and Roma manager Claudio Ranieri or former manager of AC Milan Stefano Pioli, with Juventus also reportedly eyeing Spalletti for next season. Italy’s 2026 World Cup qualification hopes now hang in the balance.

WHAT SPALLETTI SAID

Spalletti made it clear that his exit was not voluntary while speaking to insisting he had to be pushed out of the role despite his belief in the team’s future: “I am super convinced that Italy will go to the World Cup. I did not resign, I would not have resigned. You fire me, I sign the resolution because money has never been a problem in my career. The national team is different from a club.”

He also reflected emotionally on the turmoil of recent days, admitting how deeply he internalised the fallout from Italy’s World Cup qualifying struggles: “In these situations it depends a lot on how you are made, on what you put into things. It becomes difficult for me to fall asleep when something like this happens to you. Everything consumes me, nothing slips away from me. The victories more than the defeats, imagine what a night you get through but, slowly, as time passes, you take note. Could the epilogue have been different? I thought about it, but you can't go back. Some choices made turned out to be wrong.”

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR ITALY?

Italy must regroup quickly to revive their World Cup hopes, with a decision on the next manager expected soon. Whether Ranieri, Pioli, or another candidate takes charge, the FIGC faces urgent pressure to stabilise the squad and reignite belief within the Azzurri camp. Currently fourth in Group I, they are in a precarious position. Their next fixture, a must-win World Cup qualifier against Moldova, could define the tone of their campaign. That clash will be followed by key matches against Estonia and Israel during the September international break.

Spirited Vidarbha run into mighty Mumbai in a contest of contrasts

While the expectations from Mumbai are always big, Vidarbha are primed for their time under the limelight

Shashank Kishore09-Mar-2024

Big picture – Vidarbha vs Mumbai is domestic workhorses vs domestic superstars

Is the Ranji Trophy really the finishing school for those aspiring to wear the India cap? This question has been raised several times recently, at least in the aftermath of most big selection meetings for the Test team. Then again, look at those who have earned the Test cap at home against England. Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep and Devdutt Padikkal – you can say with conviction they have taken the tougher route to the India cap, and aren’t overnight IPL sensations. This “tougher route” brings us to Vidarbha, a team comprising unheralded players who toil away in anonymity most times, searching for corporate cricket gigs and club cricket stints in the UK during the off-season to ensure they are “cricket fit” when the domestic season comes around. A chance to play in the Ranji Trophy final for the first time since 2018-19 is as big as it can get. For most, it’s the most important game of their careers.Related

  • Ranji final an opportunity for Akshay Wadkar to forge his legacy

Mumbai, on the other hand, are the golden boys of the domestic scene: 41-time champs, who are now playing in their 48th final. A team that knows how to conquer big moments, one whose DNA has been etched with “unsuccessful season” tag if they don’t win. That’s enough pressure to carry into a game. Most things they do are amplified, whether they like it or not. A glorious Prithvi Shaw straight drive has people comparing him to some of the legends, even if it’s just his first set of games on a comeback trail. Musheer Khan’s impressive initiation has many wondering if he can follow in the footsteps of Sarfaraz, his older brother. Shardul Thakur’s exploits has everyone going “Lord fantastic”.Ajinkya Rahane’s Test career may have hit a dead end, but his legacy has been set in stone – having helmed India to one of their greatest Test series triumphs in Australia. His drive to pull through a wretched run of form – he has made 134 runs in 11 innings this Ranji season – while astutely leading the team and backing a young group to flourish could be legacy defining too, if it culminates in their 42nd title. In short, the expectation is big. The chatter around them, even bigger.Vidarbha have never had to content with this pressure. And the cricket they have played all season reflects that. Take the semi-final against Madhya Pradesh, where they conceded an 82-run lead and then were effectively 79 for 5 in the second innings, before Yash Rathod and Akshay Wadkar, the captain, led a stunning turnaround with a 158-run sixth-wicket stand that set MP a target of 321.Unlike Mumbai, a relatively smaller and concentrated talent pool has served as a boon. It has helped them give a longer rope to certain players purely on potential they bring to the table. Like Atharva Taide, the opener, who has repaid the faith with 529 runs in 13 innings at 44.08 – not blockbuster, but not a minor feat either. That Vidarbha are here without having any batter in the top 10 scorers and only one bowler in the top 10 wicket-takers tells you how they have pulled along as a team. It’s therefore a contest of two contrasts. The domestic workhorses against the domestic superstars. And on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far this season, the workhorses are primed for their time under the limelight, if anyone is willing to throw it on them.

Run to the final

Both sides finished with five wins in seven league games to top their respective groups. Mumbai beat Tamil Nadu inside three days on a green-tinged deck at home, while Vidarbha overturned a first-innings deficit to beat MP and prevent a repeat of the 2021-22 final.Karun Nair holds the record for the highest score in a Ranji final•PTI

Players to Watch – Umesh Yadav and Shreyas Iyer

Umesh Yadav hasn’t been in India’s Test plans for two years now, and a road back up looks increasingly unlikely. But he has continued to put the hard yards in, having featured in seven out of nine games for Vidarbha this season. He has had decent returns too – 27 wickets at 26.77. While he hasn’t picked up a five-for yet, his quick bursts have proved game changing at different stages this season for Vidarbha. The last time Mumbai won a Ranji final (2015-16), Shreyas Iyer turned the game around with a swashbuckling century on a green top in Pune against Saurashtra. Eight years later, Iyer comes into another Ranji final under different circumstances. Having lost his central contract recently, with questions raised over his desire for Test cricket, the final is as good an opportunity as any to prove the fire still burns.

Pitch and conditions

Wankhede Stadium will host the final on what is confirmed to be a fresh surface. Mumbai have rolled out green-tinged decks for each of their two knockout fixtures and have an in-form pace attack to boot. Expect a similar surface with pace and carry. Mumbai’s only loss this season, however, came at Wankhede against Uttar Pradesh.

Stats and trivia

  • Seven of the top 10 wicket-takers this season are left-arm spinners. Among them, Aditya Sarwate will be the only one featuring in the Ranji final. He has currently picked up 40 wickets at an average of 17.37. Two more wickets will take him straight to the second spot.
  • For the first time since 1971 – when Bombay beat Maharashtra – the Ranji final pits two teams from the same state geographically. Vidarbha have won both their previous finals. Mumbai have won 41 of their 47 finals.
  • Karun Nair’s 328 is the highest individual score in a Ranji final. Having won the title twice, back-to-back, with Karnataka between 2013 and 2015, he will be gunning for his third title. With 616 runs in nine innings at 41.06, he is Vidarbha’s highest run-scorer this season.

      WHAT HAPPENED?

Antonio "Turco" Mohamed has once again proven why he’s considered one of the most accomplished managers in Liga MX. With Toluca’s triumph over Tigres in the Clausura 2025 semifinals, the Argentine tactician has now led a fourth different team to the Liga MX Final – a feat few coaches can claim.

"We’re going for everything," Mohamed said after the win. "I’m not going to say publicly who I’d prefer to face. I know who, but I’ll keep it to myself. This isn't about revenge. Pumas was a personal matter – this is something else. I’m enjoying the moment, especially with my son beside me, which is a huge bonus. We’re going for it all. Hopefully next Sunday, we’ll be sitting here with the trophy. That’s our dream. It won’t be easy; both teams are very strong. We’ll give it everything we’ve got.”

With a brace from Alexis Vega and a goal by Edgar López, Toluca secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Tigres at the Estadio Nemesio Diez, sealing their place in the final with a convincing 4-1 aggregate score. Toluca will play the winner of the other seminfinal, América or Cruz Azul, for the title.

      THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Red Devils are now one step away from capturing their 11th Liga MX title, a prize that has eluded them since the Bicentenario 2010 tournament. That last championship came under the guidance of José Manuel de la Torre, when Toluca edged out Santos Laguna in a dramatic penalty shootout following a tied aggregate score.

Since then, the storied club from the State of Mexico has remained competitive, but silverware has been just out of reach – until now. With Mohamed at the helm, the Diablos Rojos have found renewed identity and purpose, finishing the Clausura 2025 regular season as league leaders and securing home field advantage for the decisive leg of the final at the iconic Estadio Nemesio Diez.

This latest run to the final marks Mohamed’s sixth appearance in a Liga MX championship series. He previously reached finals with Club América, Monterrey (three times) and Tijuana. His track record includes titles and deep postseason runs, making him one of the most decorated and consistent managers in recent Mexican football.

Despite the magnitude of the victory over Tigres – one of the most dominant sides of the past decade – Mohamed remained respectful and measured in his comments.

"Out of respect for the opponent, I won’t say much," he said. "Guido [Pizarro] is a friend. We were the better team across both legs. We earned this result against a club that has been arguably the strongest in recent years. Our goal was to make the final, and now we’re here."

Looking ahead, Mohamed emphasized the importance of a strong first leg: "We need to play well in the first match. The atmosphere here is amazing – we enjoy playing in this stadium, we know the pitch. It’s a final – there are no favorites."

      WHAT GUIDO PIZARRO SAID

Following Tigres’ elimination, coach Guido Pizarro reflected on the team’s struggles, particularly in away matches. He pointed to the lack of goals as a critical issue.

"It’s something we can’t allow to happen," he said. "We need to analyze, reflect on what’s ahead – there are definitely things we need to improve. But yes, without a doubt, the lack of goals is something we have to address."

      WHAT NEXT FOR TOLUCA?

As they wait to see whether their opponent will be América or Cruz Azul – who face off in the other semifinal -Toluca is preparing for a final that promises intensity and history.

The first leg will be played either at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes (América’s temporary home) or the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, where Cruz Azul is hosting games this season.

£83m player in the making: Spurs could strike gold on "mind-blowing" star

It might be one of the most overused words in the modern football lexicon, but Tottenham Hotspur are undoubtedly going through a project under the management of Ange Postecoglou.

That might sound like a bit of nothing phrase, but, in reality, it just means that while things might look bleak at the moment – and they certainly do – fans and pundits might need to wait a few more years to see the club’s plan come to fruition.

This will likely mean that players such as Son Heung-min, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison will be moved on and replaced by exciting and hungry youngsters.

The absurd amount of injuries the club have had to deal with this season has already seen some of those up-and-comers be given more game time, and should Daniel Levy and Co be able to get a specific deal over the line in the summer, they’ll have another young star in their squad who’s already being compared to an incredibly valuable talent on the continent.

    Spurs rising stars

Before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at a few of Spurs’ other promising prospects, such as Archie Gray.

The former Lees United gem is still only 18 years old, and while respected football analyst Ben Mattinson described him as a “future £100m” central midfielder, he has been a vital part of the defence this term.

So far, injuries have seen the Durham-born gem make 19 appearances at centre-back, seven at right-back, and five at left-back.

Another new arrival who’s made a significant impact on the first team despite still being a teenager is Lucas Bergvall, who joined the club from Swedish side Djurgarden for a fee of around £8.5m – which is starting to look like a bargain.

In recent months, the Swedish midfielder has become an increasingly important player for the manager and has made 36 appearances.

Impressively, 18 of those appearances have been starts, and he has managed to rack up a decent tally of one goal and four assists to boot.

Finally, while he’s not had quite the same impact on the first team this season, Mikey Moore looks like he’s set to become one of the North Londoners’ most dangerous attackers in the near future.

He’s made 16 appearances so far, totalling just 632 minutes, in which he’s scored a goal, provided two assists and was even compared to Neymar Jr by James Maddison.

Overall, the future looks incredibly bright for Tottenham, and it could be brighter if Levy and Co complete a deal to sign another exciting youngster in the summer, a youngster compared to an £83m star.

Spurs' potential £83m superstar in the making

Now, while all the talents mentioned above are already officially Tottenham players and will be next season – lest they be sold for some reason – the player in question might not be, despite starting for the team last Thursday.

Mathys Tel joined the Lilywhites on a short-term loan last month, but, importantly, there is an option to buy in the deal at £45m, and while his next move is not entirely down to the North Londoners, reports from last month seemed to indicate that he’d be open to staying for the long term.

Now, there might be some fans who remain unconvinced by the 19-year-old attacker, and considering he’s not hit the ground running in England, scoring one goal in six games, that would be understandable.

However, during his still relatively limited game time for Bayern Munich last season, he showed just why respected talent scout Jacek Kulig described him as a “mind-blowing talent.”

In just 1406 minutes of first-team football, he scored ten goals and provided six assists, which comes out to an astounding average of a goal involvement every 87.87 minutes and also saw him win comparisons to Borussia Dortmund’s rising star, Jamie Gittens.

The comparison primarily stemmed from FBref, which compared players in similar positions in the Bundesliga last season, created a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and concluded that the Englishman was the fifth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Frenchman.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair ranked closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots, live passes, blocks, clearances, shot-creating actions and more, all per 90.

While the comparison to one of the most exciting talents in Germany is already encouraging enough regarding the Sarcelles-born star’s development, it’s also a good sign for his future value.

For example, it was only last month that the German publication Bild, as relayed by the BBC, reported that Dortmund value their incredible youngster at up to £83m in light of his growing reputation and the interest in him from other sides.

So, if the young Englishman is worth such an astounding amount of money and is so statistically similar to the Bayern loanee, who’s to say that he, too, won’t be worth as much down the line once he gets even more game time?

Therefore, while he has not hit the ground running at Tottenham, Levy and Co should be doing all they can to bring Tel to N17 this summer, as with the right coaching, he could be an extraordinarily valuable asset on and off the pitch in the future.

Starc shatters Cummins' record for most expensive player at IPL auction

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc has shattered the record for the most expensive player at an IPL auction after being bought by Kolkata Knight riders for INR 24.75 crore (US$2,982,000 approx.). He surpassed the winning bid of INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.) that Sunrisers Hyderabad had made for Pat Cummins, Australia’s ODI World Cup winning captain, less than two hours earlier at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai.Starc came up for bidding in the first set for fast bowlers – the fourth set of the day – and the battle for him began between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. However, it was swiftly taken over by Gujarat Titans and KKR, the only franchises with more than INR 30 crore left in their purse at that point, and KKR won the final bid.The last time Starc featured in an IPL auction was in 2018 when KKR had signed him for INR 9.4 crore. He didn’t play that season, though, because of injury; he hasn’t played the IPL since 2015, in fact.”I’ve probably prioritised international cricket firstly for a long time whilst having a bit of a taste of IPL and Big Bash in Australia,” Starc said after his bid. “I’ve always held firm that I’ve wanted to play my best cricket for Australia and make myself available for Australia where I can. At the same time, the temptation to go back to IPL and how exciting it is to be involved in such a great tournament, big names, big players, big stages -it’s too hard to pass up. There’s a place to play all of it. It’s just being mindful and putting the work ethic into being able to do all of it.”Related

    • As it happened – IPL 2024 auction

Before Starc’s record bid, Sunrisers had spent INR 20.50 crore (US$2,470,000 approx.) to sign Cummins, staving off competition from Royal Challengers Bangalore to get their man. Cummins’ price had surpassed the record of INR 18.50 crore that Punjab Kings had paid for England allrounder Sam Curran at the 2023 IPL auction. Cummins had skipped the 2023 IPL to focus on international cricket; his previous highest auction price was INR 15.50 crore, when KKR had signed him in 2020.”Pumped to be joining SRH for the upcoming IPL season,” Cummins said after he was sold. “I’ve heard a lot about the Orange Army, I’ve played at Hyderabad a few times and always loved it, so can’t wait to get started. Great to see another Aussie in Trav Head over there as well. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun this season, and hopefully plenty of success.”Sunrisers head coach Daniel Vettori said they were able to spend that much on Cummins because they already had most bases covered. “Someone else desperately wanted him as well, that’s why he got pushed to that high number,” Vettori said. “Because our team is relatively settled and we have the budget, and we have already picked up Travis Head and [Wanindu] Hasaranga, we felt like we’d covered most things that we wanted at the auction, so we had the ability to spend that much.”

ODI World Cup performers get big paydays

New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra, Australia batter Travis Head, South Africa allrounder Gerald Coetzee, and Sri Lanka quick Dilshan Madushanka landed IPL deals on the back of impressive performances in the recent ODI World Cup in India.Mitchell was fiercely fought for by Capitals, Punjab and Chennai Super Kings, and was finally bought for INR 14 crore by CSK after entering the auction at a base price of INR 1 crore. Ravindra was also bought by CSK for INR 1.8 crore.CSK had also wanted to buy Head, the Player of the Match in the ODI World Cup semi-final and final, but lost him to Sunrisers, who signed him for INR 6.8 crore. Both Coetzee (INR 5 crore) and Madushanka (INR 4.6 crore) were signed by Mumbai Indians for a total of INR 9.6 crore – these were their first two buys at the auction.Afghanistan allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai also found a home at Titans, alongside his countrymen Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

    Uncapped Indians earn big bucks

UP top-order batter Sameer Rizvi, Jharkhand wicketkeeper Kumar Kushagra and Vidarbha middle-order batter Shubham Dubey, three of the players in ESPNcricinfo’s picks for most in-demand uncapped Indian players at the auction, earned big IPL deals.Dubey went first, with Capitals going after him with intent, but he eventually got sold to Royals for INR 5.8 crore. Rizvi’s name came up not long after, and if Dubey’s fee was the highest paid for an uncapped batter with no IPL experience, topping the INR 5.25 Punjab paid for Shahrukh Khan in 2021, the record didn’t last long – Rizvi earned INR 8.40 crore after CSK beat off Titans and Capitals for his services.Kushagra, for a while, threatened to top Rizvi’s bid, but Capitals got him for INR 7.20 crore after fighting off competition from CSK and Titans. A scrap for Shahrukh was expected, and there was one between Punjab – who had released him prior to the auction – and Titans. His price soared until it stopped at INR 7.40 crore, with Titans getting the big-hitting middle-order batter.Titans also tried to buy back left-arm quick Yash Dayal, who eventually went to RCB for INR 5 crore. Titans, however, picked up another left-arm quick Sushant Mishra for INR 2.2 crore, while left-arm M Siddharth went to LSG for INR 2.4 crore. One of the biggest surprises came late in the auction when the uncapped 21-year old Robin Minz, a wicketkeeper from Jharkhand with a base price of INR 20 lakh, was up for bidding. Four teams wanted him, first CSK and MI, and then SRH, before he was eventually sold for INR 3.6 crore to the Titans. An aggressive batter from Gumla, Minz has not played any domestic T20 cricket. One of his three coaches is Chanchal Bhattacharya, who also coached MS Dhoni. Minz idolises Dhoni and was selected for a Mumbai Indians camp earlier this year.

    The surprise big buys

The 2024 auction had begun with a surprise, when West Indies T20 captain Rovman Powell was signed for INR 7.4 crore by Rajasthan Royals, who spent more than half their auction purse on one player. Powell’s previous auction price was INR 2.8 crore, which Capitals paid for him in the 2022 auction.West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was also hotly fought for by CSK, Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and RCB. He had been released by Titans, who had paid INR 2.4 crore for him in the 2022 auction, and was signed for INR 11.50 crore by RCB, who needed an overseas fast bowler after having released Josh Hazlewood, Wayne Parnell and David Willey.Australian left-arm quick Spencer Johnson, who plays for Brisbane Heat in the BBL, was another big surprise buy during the accelerated round towards the end of the auction. Having entered the auction at a base price of INR 50 lakh, Johnson’s price skyrocketed as Capitals and Titans bid for him. He eventually went for INR 10 crore to Titans, who needed an overseas fast bowler as back-up for Josh Little. Having lost Johnson to Titans, the Capitals picked up Australian quick Jhye Richardson shortly after for INR 5 crore. After picking up overseas quicks Coetzee and Madhushanka, Mumbai bought a third overseas fast bowler in 29-year old Sri Lankan Nuwan Thushara, who has played five T20 internationals. KKR and RCB began the bidding for him, but MI eventually won the bid at INR 4.8 crore.South African batter Rilee Rossouw had gone unsold when he came up for bidding in the early part of the auction but he was in big demand during the accelerated round at the end of the day. Capitals had bought Rossouw for INR 4.6 crore at the 2023 auction and then released him, but they entered the bidding for him once again and took the price up towards INR 8 crore, at which point they lost him to Punjab.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

How did the capped Indian players fare?

The most expensive Indian player at the 2024 IPL auction was fast bowler Harshal Patel. The bidding for him began between Titans and Punjab, and then between Punjab and LSG, before he was finally sold to Punjab for INR 11.75 crore.Allrounder Shardul Thakur (INR 4 crore) will return for his second stint at CSK, who signed him for INR 4 crore. The last time Thakur had been sold at the auction, he had gone for INR 10.75 crore to Capitals in 2022.Fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Shivam Mavi were also in high demand. SRH and Capitals tried to sign Umesh but Titans eventually did so for INR 5.8 crore. Mavi became LSG’s first buy at the 2024 auction, when they outbid RCB by spending nearly half their remaining purse to sign him for INR 6.4 crore.Jaydev Unadkat, who once commanded a bid of INR 11.4 crore in the 2018 auction, was sold for INR 1.6 crore to Sunrisers.

    The steal deals

Sunrisers picked up Sri Lanka legspinning allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga at his base price of INR 1.5 crore as a like-for-like replacement for Adil Rashid, whom they had released. The last time Hasaranga had been sold at the 2022 auction, RCB had paid INR 10.75 crore for him.Capitals managed to sign England batter Harry Brook for INR 4 crore; Brook had been signed by Sunrisers for INR 13.25 crore last year and subsequently released after an unremarkable maiden IPL season.

GVB sold "explosive" Rangers star, now he's worth more than Dessers & Cerny

da heads bet: Glasgow Rangers opted to remove Philippe Clement from his post in the Ibrox dugout earlier this year and Barry Ferguson came in to replace him as the interim boss until the end of the season.

da casino: The Light Blues, if you include penalty shootout wins, have won four of their five matches under the Scottish boss, who secured a dramatic victory against Celtic last time out in the Scottish Premiership.

Several players have caught the eye and made the most of the change in management in recent weeks, including Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny.

The Rangers players who have impressed under Barry Ferguson

The Wolfsburg loanee has been a star throughout the campaign, with 11 goals in the league, but he has scored three goals in five matches under Ferguson so far.

    Vaclav Cerny

Cerny, who is currently valued at £7.5m by Transfermarkt, has provided a consistent threat in front of goal and his return to the Bundesliga in the summer will be a big blow for the Gers because of his goalscoring exploits.

Dessers, meanwhile, had scored one goal in six games at the end of Clement’s reign. Since Ferguson came in, the Nigerian forward has scored four goals and provided one assist in five matches, which shows that the new boss has helped him to rediscover his best form.

The experienced number nine is valued at £3.3m by Transfermarkt, which means that the two players are worth £10.8m combined, which is less than one former Gers star is currently worth.

The former Rangers star who is worth more than Cerny and Dessers

Whilst Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in charge at Ibrox, Rangers cashed in on versatile defender Calvin Bassey for a reported fee of £19.6m – selling him to Ajax in 2022.

The left-footed titan, who was once described as “explosive” by former coach Steve Beaglehole, made 65 first-team appearances for the Gers.

    Calvin Bassey

After just one season in the Netherlands, Ajax moved on from the Nigeria international and sold him to Fulham for £19.3m, making a small loss on the centre-back, and his value on Transfermarkt at the time was just £12.5m.

As you can see in the table above, Bassey has been a regular starter in the Premier League for the Cottagers since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, whilst dominating opposition players in physical duels.

His form on the pitch for Fulham in the English top-flight has caused his market value to soar to an eye-catching £20.9m, as per Transfermarkt, which is a significant increase from the £12.5m it was at in 2013 and is more than the fees Ajax and Fulham paid for his services.

This means that his value has, although it has taken several years to happen, increased since Rangers decided to cash in on him after they made it to the Europa League final in 2022.

The Light Blues now look back and wonder if they did enough to extract as much value out of his sale as possible, as he is now worth almost twice as much as two of their current top-performing players – Cerny and Dessers.
