Villa had the chance to sign Rashford for £40 million as part of the loan agreement that brought the forward to the club in January, but the club have confirmed his departure, thanking him for his "amazing efforts and contributions".

It has now been reported that Rashford is seeking a move away from the Premier League this summer. Journalist David Ornstein claims the England international is keen to win titles overseas.
DID YOU KNOW?
The same report states that Rashford is open to another loan move from Old Trafford, with a swap deal also a possibility. It has been claimed that Barcelona is his dream move, with the La Liga champions giving some thought to the idea.
Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR RASHFORD?
Rashford may have to wait until late in the summer to seal a transfer to Barca. The club are intent on signing Nico Williams as a first-choice winger but could make a loan move for Rashford once they know their financial situation at the end of the window. For now, he is due to report for pre-season at United on July 7.
Strikers have captured the hearts of supporters over the years at Chelsea, but none more so than Didier Drogba given his time as a player at Stamford Bridge.
The Ivorian joined the Blues under José Mourinho back in the summer of 2004, with not many knowing what to expect after he arrived from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.
However, he would provide the goods on a consistent basis, notching a total of 147 goals over two separate spells – spanning a total of nine years in West London.
Such a record has cemented him in the club’s history forever, currently sitting as the Blues’ second-highest Premier League goalscorer behind the iconic Frank Lampard.
Fast-forward to the present day, boss Enzo Maresca has the opportunity to land another version of the Ivorian with a move for a star currently plying his trade in France’s top division.
Chelsea plot summer move for new talisman
According to French journalist Mohamed Toubache, Chelsea are keen on a summer move to land Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha to improve the current forward department.
The 22-year-old, who’s currently plying his trade for the Blues’ sister club, has notched a total of 12 goals in all competitions this campaign, in what has been a breakout year as a professional.
He’s in his second year at the French outfit after joining from Sturm Graz in the summer of 2023 but has enjoyed a rapid development over the last couple of months.
Whilst no fee has been touted for his signature over the off-season, it’s likely the Dutchman could demand a decent fee given his form in Ligue 1 throughout 2024/25.
Emegha may not be many supporters’ first choice to improve the current situation, but when comparing him to the other options on the table, he’s managed to match or better them in numerous key areas.
How Emegha compares to other strikers linked with Chelsea
Although the summer transfer window is yet to open, Chelsea have wasted no time in targeting a new talisman to aid Maresca’s first-team squad next season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhareacts
Matheus Cunha is just one player linked with a move to West London, with the Brazilian stating his desire to leave Wolves this summer to reach the next level in his career.
The 25-year-old also has admirers from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, with a real battle facing the sides upon the opening of the window.
Dušan Vlahović is another player on the club’s shortlist, once again appearing on the radar after previously being of interest back in the January transfer window.
However, despite the previous names mentioned, Emegha, who’s previously been labelled “phenomenal” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has managed to produce stats way beyond the levels of the pair.

The Dutchman may have registered slightly fewer combined goals and assists than Cunha, but has matched him for contributions per 90 – highlighting the threat he poses in attacking areas.
He’s managed to notch a higher shot-on-target accuracy than the pair, showcasing his accuracy when the ball falls his way, offering Maresca the dangerman he’s been hunting for.
Emegha has also completed more of the passes he’s attempted this campaign, whilst also coming out on top in more aerial battles, demonstrating his all-round ability – something which they’ve desperately been craving.
His 6”4 frame coupled with his pace and ability to run the channels makes him a similar build to Drogba, potentially being the club’s next version of the fan-favourite.
Should the hierarchy complete a deal for his services this summer, it would undoubtedly be an exciting addition, with the Blues getting themselves a future icon should he get anywhere close to the Ivorian’s level after his own move from Ligue 1 over 20 years ago.

Sunrisers made 277, the highest ever total in IPL history, and Mumbai, just as incredibly, fell only 31 short

Moody: Head set the tone, and Sunrisers just didn’t look back
Sixes were being hit for fun. Runs were flowing at a breakneck pace. You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking you were watching a video game. The carnage in Hyderabad resulted in an 11-year-old IPL record falling, RCB’s seemingly insurmountable total of 263 from 2013 falling by the wayside thanks to a breathtaking, collective show from the Sunrisers Hyderabad batters. They notched up the highest total in the 16-year history of the IPL – 277 for 3 – but then, just as incredibly, Mumbai Indians almost paid them back with the same coin, their batters coming out with a nothing-to-lose attitude. Eventually, they ran out of steam and finished on 246 for 5, the highest IPL total in a losing cause.Travis Head set the pace on the night, striking an 18-ball half-century, the fastest for SRH in the IPL. His record lasted roughly four overs, Abhishek Sharma slamming a 16-ball fifty to relegate him to No. 2. An hour after that, Heinrich Klaasen cut loose to seemingly bat MI out of the contest. But the sixes kept rolling off the Mumbai bats too, helping them keep up with the asking rate for most of the chase, eventually falling only 31 short.Related

Never were more runs scored in a men’s T20 match (523). Never were most sixes hit in a men’s T20 (38). At the end of the close to four-hour six-fest, only two bowlers returned with an economy rate of under ten an over. The perfect Head-startHead, in for Marco Jansen, continued from where he had left off on his previous tour of India. He was off the mark with a four off IPL debutant Kwena Maphaka, the 17-year-old who played for South Africa at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year. Head was given a life when Tim David dropped him at mid-off off Hardik Pandya’s first ball. But there was no looking back from there.Head smacked two fours and two sixes in a 22-run Maphaka over before hitting two fours and a six off Gerald Coetzee in an over that went for 23 to end the powerplay. Head had scored 59 of the 81 SRH made in the first six overs. In his next over, though, Coetzee bowled a short and wide one, which the batter could only carve to deep backward point.Abhishek shows his mettleHead’s inclusion in the XI meant Abhishek had to move down the order, and he walked in at No. 3 after Mayank Agarwal fell in the fifth over. Abhishek got going with a pull off Coetzee and then meted out a special treatment to the legspin Piyush Chawla, hitting him for three sixes in an over. That helped SRH notch up their 100 in just seven overs, their second-fastest in the IPL.Abhishek also tore into Maphaka’s third over, hitting him for a sequence of 4, 6, 6, 4 to complete his fifty and snatch the record from Head. The key was how early he picked the length of the bowlers. He hit seven sixes in his 23-ball stay for 63 runs, before heaving a half-tracker that Chawla fired in seam-up at 112.8kph straight to deep midwicket.Heinrich Klaasen hit another rampaging half-century•AP Photo / Mahesh Kumar
Klaasen, Markram add finishing touchesWith nine overs to go and two right-hand batters in the middle, Hardik Pandya sensed an opportunity to get left-arm spinner Shams Mulani in the game. That played into the hands of Klaasen, though, who is a spin-basher. In T20s since January 2022, no batter who has faced at least 500 balls had a higher strike rate against spin than Klaasen’s 174.38 before the start of the game.True to form, he smacked Mulani over long-off to get his rhythm going. Klaasen then hit a six each off Hardik and Jasprit Bumrah as SRH crossed 200 in the 15th over. Aiden Markram, at the other end, hit a six and a four but was happy to give the strike to his South Africa team-mate. Klaasen brought up his fifty off 22 balls, which was only the third quickest on the night.Klaasen hit two successive sixes in the last over bowled by Mulani to take Sunrisers past RCB’s record score. SRH added 63 in the last four overs to post the fourth-highest total in all men’s T20s.Mumbai lose their fizzRohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan kicked off Mumbai’s reply in fine fashion. Rohit muscled Bhuvneshwar Kumar down the ground before hitting Jaydev Unadkat – brought in for T Natarajan, who had a niggle – for back-to-back sixes. Kishan meanwhile took 23 off Bhuvneshwar’s second over, hitting him for a four and three sixes. Kishan then slogged Shahbaz Ahmed to deep midwicket, but Rohit kept going. He whipped Pat Cummins’ second ball over midwicket before miscuing a pull to fall for 26 off just 12. Only twice in the IPL has Rohit scored more – 37 in April 2015 vs RCB, and 27 in May 2015 vs Chennai Super Kings – off the first 12 balls he faced.Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma also kept Mumbai abreast with the required rate. They found boundaries regularly, with Tilak leading the charge, and added 84 off 37 for the third wicket. But once they fell within 21 balls of each other, MI lost momentum. David managed to hit a few into the stands, but by then it was too late.
da betobet: Everton are gearing up for a summer of bustling activity.
da esoccer bet: Not only are the Toffees set to leave their hallowed Goodison Park and move to Bramley Moore, but with new owners, The Friedkin Group, looking to bring the club back to prominence, back to the top half of the Premier League, exciting investment is anticipated.
David Moyes has reportedly been handed greater transfer powers than his predecessors and will look to bring a range of signings in to strengthen the various parts of the Everton engine.
Everton manager David Moyes
Of course, some exits will need to be enforced too, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin perhaps the biggest name expected to depart this summer.
Why Everton need to part with Calvert-Lewin
Everton are approaching a new era, and while Moyes’ arrival felt like a reprieve for Calvert-Lewin after his struggles under Sean Dyche this year, a fresh hamstring injury sustained in January against Brighton & Hove Albion has sent him spiralling back into the shadows.
The 27-year-old did score during the thumping win over Tottenham Hotspur one game before, but this snapped a 16-match goalless run in the Premier League.
Taking the variables into consideration, there’s a sense it would be rather imprudent to tie the injury-prone, goal-averse striker to a new deal as he enters the final few months of his current contract.
Earning £100k per week, the England international has been a Toffee for a long time, enjoyed highs and lows, but it’s the right time for him to move on, especially with Beto going from strength to strength since Moyes arrived.

Beto can’t do it all alone though, as recent fixtures have demonstrated for the Bissau-Guinean. Everton need a new striker, and the perfect up-and-comer may well have been lined up.
Everton lining up DCL upgrade
According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Everton are preparing a bid for Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, who has enjoyed prolific success in Ligue 1 this season.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
The report states Emegha, 22, wants to move to the Premier League. Incoming Toffees Director of Football, Angus Kinnear, will have his work cut out, for Newcastle United and West Ham United have also been named as suitors.
It’s uncertain what Strasbourg are looking to bank through the sale of their star striker, but it is suggested they are willing to do business, cashing in while his stock is high.
What Emanuel Emegha would bring to Everton
Moyes has already showcased his tactical prowess through rejuvenating Beto, and with the power to pick a new forward who he chooses (within reason, of course) Emegha might just be the perfect long-term option for the number nine spot at Bramley Moore.
Everton manager David Moyes andBetoafter the match
Strasbourg signed Emegha from Austrian club Sturm Graz in July 2023, actually beating Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan to his signature for a reported €13m (roughly £11m) fee.
He gave a good account of himself last year, notching eight goals in the French top flight across just 23 starting appearances.
This year, it seems the Dutch-born striker has taken the next step in his development, refining his shooting to chalk up 11 goals from 21 matches, also creating four big chances for his teammates.
Standing at a towering 6 foot 5, there’s also the matter of Emegha boasting the aerial prowess to take Calvert-Lewin’s – one of the best headers of the ball – mantle.
Hailed for his “simply phenomenal” season by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Emegha is endowed with all the properties of a high-level centre-forward, also boasting a profile that Everton have been known to desire in the past.
Let’s explain. As per FBref, Emegha ranks among the top 9% of central strikers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 20% for clearances made per 90, illustrating his technical skill and willingness to get back and scoop away danger when under the kosh.
It’s such a varied style of play that Moise Kean – now of Fiorentina and a player Evertonians know well – is listed as Emegha’s most similar player in Europe’s top five leagues via the same stats-led source.
Moise Kean for Fiorentina
Everton welcomed Kean to Goodison Park from Juventus when he was just a teenager, for a hefty £25m fee. He was sold for a similar £25m figure in 2023, mitigating the frustration that it didn’t work out, but after just two goals from 32 matches in the Premier League and a series of loan spells, it’s one to cast a rueful eye back on all the same.
But his exploits since have proved his worth, proved Everton’s reasoning behind breaking the bank to bring him in before he had fully hit his stride.
Indeed, having now left Juventus for Fiorentina, the Italy international, now 24 years old, has scored 20 goals across 34 appearances this season, with La Viola idol Luca Toni claiming the club are “doing something extraordinary” in unlocking Kean and turning him into an elite-class striker.
Now, Everton are moving to sign the newer version in Emegha, a player whose profile has already been scouted and pursued by the likes of Tottenham and might just prove to hand Moyes a new striker, his own Kean, to propel Bramley Moore into some lofty conversations, challenging at the top end of the table for a place in European competition.

Arsenal’s summer goal is clear. Forget everything else, Andrea Berta, you need a striker.
It’s been a problem for a number of years now and for some reason, it’s been ignored by the Gunners’ recruitment team in the last two transfer windows.
Last summer, they looked at RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, only for the Slovenian powerhouse to sign a new deal in Germany. That move could be back on the table in 2025, however.
RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskobefore taking a penalty
In January, there were a number of links. Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic looked to be on the market but did not move. Manchester City signed Omar Marmoush, too. There were players available.
That said, it looks like Arsenal are waiting for Alexander Isak. Sadly, they might be waiting a long old time…
The latest on Alexander Isak's future
Back in the summer of 2022, Swedish centre-forward moved from Real Socided, joining Newcastle United in a deal worth £63m. Given his form since, it’s safe to say he’s been worth every penny and then some.
Newcastle United's AlexanderIsak
Well, as it happens, the Gunners swerved on the chance to sign him in the January of the same year. A report from the Athletic at the time suggested that Arsenal weren’t prepared to pay Isak’s then £75m release clause, deeming it too high.
Doesn’t that look rather foolish now?
Reports emerged this week suggesting that the North Londoners were set to launch a £101m bid for the Toon star but that is unlikely to be accepted. Claims over the winter suggested that it may take as much as £150m for the Magpies to sell.
Isak appears happy at St James’ Park and is riding the crest of a wave right now having scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final last Sunday.
If Newcastle don’t secure Champions League football then it might persuade the striker to move elsewhere but it would still take a colossal fee.
As a result, Arsenal may have to turn their attenion back to the aforementioned Sesko. He’s got a thunderous shot on him which reminds us…the Gunners have had some brilliant strikers throughout the years, some even better than Isak.
The £3m Arsenal signing who was better than Isak
While Arsene Wenger’s time at Arsenal ended without much success, there was always one certainty; he had a mighty fine centre-forward leading the line.
Whether it was Ian Wright, Thierry Henry, Alexis Sanchez and to a lesser extent, Olivier Giroud, the pedigree of striker was impressive.
While Henry – certainly Isak-esque in his movements and finishing ability – is the club’s greatest-ever player – we want to talk about a certain Robin van Persie here.
As it happens, the Dutchman found himself in a similar situation to Isak when he moved to Manchester United.
Van Persie wasn’t happy the direction the club were travelling in and after getting fed up of not competing for major honours, he moved to the biggest club in the country at the time, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils.
While Isak isn’t unhappy in the north east, he will eventually want to challenge for titles like the Premier League and Champions League. He may now be a Carabao Cup winner but as Mikel Arteta’s side have proven over the last three seasons, they are closer to winning the league than Newcastle are. That’s a fact.
That’s precisely why the Flying Dutchman decided to leave Wenger and the Emirates behind in 2012, signing for United in a £24m deal. It’s safe to say his switch was a roaring success, winning the league title in his debut campaign at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex subsequently waxed lyrical over the attacker:
While Van Persie was sensational in United red, scoring 58 goals in 105 outings, it was in Arsenal red where he learned the arts of being a striker, ultimately becoming a Premier League icon.
Signed for a measly £3m from Feyenoord 2004, the 20-year-old arrived as more of a natural winger. However, like Henry, Wenger transformed him into one of the deadliest players we’ve seen in England’s top-flight.

To put things simply, he was even more lethal in front of goal than Isak. In total, Van Persie scored 132 times in 278 appearances for the Gunners, with his best campaign in front of goal that remarkable 2011/12 season where he netted 30 goals in 38 Premier League games and added another seven in cup competitions.
He won the top-flight Golden Boot that year and won it again with United the following season, bagging 26 in 38.
While Isak is still in the infancy of his career, he is yet to win a Premier League Golden Boot and unlike Van Persie, has not yet won a PFA Premier League Player of the Year award either. He will surely get there but there will be no topping Liverpool’s Mo Salah in 2024/25.
Former Manchester United forward Robin van Persie.
Speaking of this season, how Arteta must long for a striker of Van Persie’s calibre. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are both out with season-ending injuries and they’re having to rely on midfielder Mikel Merino to score the goals.

According to , the Liga club has claimed that the documentary is misleading by its suggestion of widespread racist behavior among fans during a heated match at Mestalla in May 2023. While three individuals were found guilty of racism, the club argues that the film unfairly generalises the actions of a few to the entire fanbase.

The Netflix documentary 'Baila, Vini', which means 'Dance, Vini' in English, is about Vinícius Junior and how he preapres himself to compete at the highest level. Footage and subtitles in the Netflix documentary suggest Vinicius was targeted with racial slurs, specifically, 'Mono, mono!', which translates to 'Monkey, monkey!', during a heated La Liga match against Valencia. The club insists that the real chant was 'Tonto, tonto!', translating to 'Idiot, idiot!'. Valencia acknowledged and condemned the racist behaviour of three fans, but argue that the documentary misrepresents the situation and could damage the club's image worldwide.
WHAT VINICIUS JR. SAID
Discussing the documentary on Instagram, Vinicius wrote: "A 24-year-old having a documentary sounds weird, right? My career is far from over, a biography now wouldn't make sense. But I reflected and saw that I already had something to say, there was already a story to tell. May it inspire. Smile is my identity. Today, I jokingly recount the childhood woes. That was a tough one, though. Tears well up the eyes just thinking what my life would be like without football. Thank you to everyone who allowed me to experience it all."

Vinicius Junior will continue in his attempts to combat racism in football, as the Brazilian intends to inspire younger generations, both on and off the pitch. The Brazilian and his Madrid team-mates will play the penultimate game of the 2024-25 La Liga season with a meeting with Sevilla on May 18. Valencia, meanwhile, will wait for their legal team to review the documentary further for possible defamation or misrepresentation, which could set up a possible legal showdown with the streaming giant. West Indies batter smacks joint-fastest half-century on ODI debut to help whitewash UAE
Deivarayan Muthu10-Jun-2023Alick Athanaze has admitted to being nervous before making his international debut, but he shook it off quickly and went onto make it a memorable one by slamming the joint-fastest half-century on ODI debut. Athanaze’s 65 off 45 balls, including 51 which came in the powerplay alone, set the tone for West Indies’ successful chase of 185.”I was a bit nervous actually, but the nerves went away when I got my first runs and it was good,” Athanaze told CWI media after West Indies swept UAE 3-0 in Sharjah. “It was a really good experience [on debut]. [I] haven’t batted much in the night, so it was a first for me actually. But normally that’s how I play in the powerplay – I always look to get the team off to a good start.”Athanaze grew up idolising Brian Lara and more recently when he was with West Indies’ Test side in South Africa, he worked with Lara, who was on tour as the team’s performance mentor. Athanaze said that the conversations with Lara have had a positive influence on his batting approach.”For me, it has been really good,” Athanaze said. “Basically, what we spoke about was judging lengths and trying to get ahead of the bowler. It worked really nicely, and I got myself into some good positions and it was really good to bat out there tonight.”Athanaze put left-arm fingerspinner Aayan Afzal Khan out of the attack in the powerplay with a brace of sixes. Then when UAE’s seamers bowled into the Sharjah pitch, Athanaze countered them with a variety of pulls, including the short-arm jab.Related

Athanaze was the top run-getter in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, ahead of Shubman Gill, but it has taken him five years to make the step-up to international cricket. Athanaze isn’t part of West Indies’ ODI squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup Qualifier but could get a run in the following home series against India. Spinner Kevin Sinclair, who had been part of the Under-19 and West Indies A set-ups with Athanaze, was impressed with Athanaze’s fearless strokeplay on debut.”For me, I’ve always known Alick since Under-19 [cricket],” Sinclair said. “He’s a good player and a good batsman. To watch himself express himself tonight at a higher level is something really good to see from the sidelines. I always knew he could bat and he did bring form from Bangladesh and he did very well.”Athanaze also spoke of how the new team management, under the leadership of Daren Sammy and Shai Hope, has encouraged the youngsters to play with confidence and freedom.”The team did really, really well,” Athanaze said. “One thing the captain stresses about is always improving and as you saw right throughout the series, we improved – not just on the batting but fielding as well and bowling. Carlos Brathwaite, who was on TV commentary, noted that Sinclair is now getting his offbreak to grip and turn more than he did in the past. This has in turn made his slider more effective and put him in West Indies or West Indies A contention across formats.”We were in a bit of a bother, so my thing was just to keep it simple and keep it as tight as possible,” Sinclair said. “Hence, getting a breakthrough as well, and that was really good for myself.”Sinclair credited former Guyana allrounder and coach Esuan Crandon for his recent progress. During the Headley-Weekes tri-series, Sinclair also benefitted from working with Nikita Miller.”As I mentioned I couple of weeks ago, Esuan Crandon,” Sinclair said. “The support he has given me and every time I step out [onto the field], I try and do what I can do with the bat, ball and in the field as well.”It’s all about consistency and I just want to take that moving forward and try to be consistent in what I do.”After winning the Player-of-the-Match award, Sinclair dedicated it to his grandfather Carlton, who was employed as a security guard. Carlton has doubled up as Sinclair’s mentor over the years.”Just want to mention that two days ago was my grandfather’s birthday,” Sinclair said. “It was his 75th birthday. Pink ball, white ball, red ball – it doesn’t really matter.”She’s going to be a great asset to our side, so hopefully she can maintain that and keep sticking her hand up for selection.”King spent a month in Perth working hard on controlling her length after returning home from the Hundred in August and is reaping the benefits.”Her speed through the air at the moment and her control with her spin and her length has been impressive right throughout the week,” Healy said. “It was actually really easy throwing her the ball as the first spinning option knowing that she was going to get the job done.”I’m pumped to see her back out here for Australia, and the passion and the energy that she brings is great for our group. It was nice to see her get rewarded.”Healy lauded Australia’s patience with the ball on Thursday on what looked like a good batting wicket.Plans to restrict Hayley Matthews paid off when the West Indies captain and star batter was bowled by Kim Garth for 20 off 20 balls.Matthews will again be crucial to the tourists’ hopes of causing an upset to deny Australia another series win.”We want to win games of cricket and win series, and that won’t change heading into Saturday,” Healy said. “We’re looking to come out here and be as clinical as what we have in the last two games.”

Australia steamrolled Sri Lanka’s listless batting order across two innings on day four to complete a near-flawless performance
Tristan Lavalette01-Feb-2025Australia brushed aside any concern over Galle’s fickle weather by steamrolling through Sri Lanka’s listless batting order across two innings on day four to complete a near-flawless performance in the first Test. After two sessions on day three were washed out, Australia’s push for a straightforward victory appeared under some threat with wet weather also forecast for later on the fourth day.But the rain held off and Australia resumed their domination by remarkably claiming 15 wickets to seal a massive innings and 242-run victory in a match that effectively only lasted nine sessions. Such was the gulf between the sides, Australia batted 154 overs in their sole innings compared to Sri Lanka’s 106.5 overs spread over two innings.Related

Sri Lanka's spinners find no answers to Australia's proactive gameplan
It was a brilliant performance from a new-look Australia without skipper Pat Cummins and boasting a spin-heavy attack. Everything went to plan for stand-in captain Steven Smith after he won a favourable toss and Australia capitalised on a slow surface to post their highest ever total in Asia.Australia’s decision to reshuffle their batting order proved a masterstroke with Josh Inglis scoring a rapid century on debut. So too selecting three spinners with left-armer Matthew Kuhnemann underlining his value in the subcontinent with nine wickets for the match having made a speedy recovery from a thumb injury sustained in a BBL game on January 16.Australia were well prepared and executed their plans with bat and ball superbly, but they came up against an inept Sri Lanka. Matches between the teams traditionally have been highly competitive in this terrain, but Sri Lanka were completely outclassed and will need to regroup quickly before the second Test at the same venue starting on February 6.The result means Australia have retained the Warne-Muralidaran Trophy. After being forced to follow-on, having lost 5 for 9 to be bowled out for 165 in their first innings, Sri Lanka hoped to reset and muster enough fight to get them into the late afternoon when rain was expected. But Sri Lanka’s troubles continued in their second innings against left-arm quick Mitchell Starc and offspinner Todd Murphy, both of whom had not bowled in almost 24 hours.Opener Oshada Fernando in the third over fell plumb lbw to a fierce in-swinging delivery from Starc. Fernando, bafflingly, wasted a review in yet another hapless use of the technology from Sri Lanka in this match.Mitchell Starc removed Oshada Fernando•Getty Images
It meant Chandimal came to the crease less than an hour after his earlier dismissal in the first innings. But he watched from the other end as opener Dimuth Karunaratne had a horrible misjudgement and was clean bowled not playing a shot against Murphy.Sri Lanka had remarkably lost 7 for 15 across the two innings in little over an hour. But Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews combined for a 69-run partnership, Sri Lanka’s best of the match, to offer belated resistance. But disaster struck in the last over before lunch when Chandimal on 31 gloved Lyon to short leg as Australia successfully reviewed the not-out decision. When play resumed after the interval, the main interest was how quickly Australia could roll through Sri Lanka. But Smith, so astute in this match, made a rare misjudgement when he decided not to review an lbw shout on Mathews who missed an attempted reverse sweep off Nathan Lyon. Replays showed that the not-out decision would have been overturned, but it didn’t halt Australia’s momentum despite an entertaining cameo from Kamindu Mendis.Kamindu went on the attack and showed the type of aggressive form that powered him to average 74 from 10 Tests before this match. He whacked Kuhnemann down the ground for a boundary to race to 32, but on the next delivery he was unable to get under a delivery and holed out to deep midwicket.Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews shared a 69-run stand for the third wicket•AFP/Getty Images
It was another tame dismissal for Sri Lanka and gifted Kuhnemann’s first wicket against left-handers in Test cricket having badly struggled up to that point, leaking 108 runs from 101 deliveries.Mathews soon fell to Lyon at short leg after failing to execute a reverse sweep before skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis combined for a half-century partnership to prolong the inevitable. Not for the first time in this match, Dhananjaya threw his wicket away and it was a matter of time despite a maiden Test half-century from Jeffrey Vandersay, who was Sri Lanka’s best bowler in Australia’s first innings.Lyon added a couple of wickets to finish with match figures of 7 for 135 after having had little to do during the recent series against India. The result was swift in the end, but Australia entered the day’s play with some anxiety. There had been questions raised over whether Australia batted too long in their first innings as they posted their highest total in Asia.Resuming their first innings at 136 for 5, Sri Lanka found themselves with unexpected hope of surviving with a draw due to the wet weather. But they desperately needed Chandimal to kick on having compiled an attractive half-century on day three. The pressure was on Chandimal and Kusal Mendis as the last recognised batters before the tail.Smith deployed Kuhnemann and Lyon from the get-go as Chandimal unfurled the reverse sweep which he had used to good effect on the truncated day three. It was a cautious start from Sri Lanka’s batters with Kuhnemann extracting awkward bounce that occasionally reared off the surface. Mendis went to his favoured sweep shot against Kuhnemann and he whacked a boundary to raise Sri Lanka’s 150.But Australia were well prepared with their tactics and baited Mendis into the sweep shot with two fielders positioned deep square of the wicket. Mendis couldn’t contain himself and top-edged a sweep to be well caught by a running Murphy at square leg.The burden fell to Chandimal, who had been unable to recapture his fluency from earlier in the innings. His rearguard finally ended on 72 when he missed a reverse sweep to fall lbw to Lyon as he reviewed in vain.Sri Lanka’s tail folded quickly with Kuhnemann claiming his second five-wicket haul of his Test career, after his 5 for 16 against India in Indore. But he was just getting warmed up as Australia continued on their merry way to inflict Sri Lanka’s heaviest defeat in Test cricket.
